Overview
EN 2714-008:2006 is a European standard specifying the requirements for aerospace electrical cables designed for general purpose use on-board aircraft. These cables are single and multicore, screened with braided nickel-plated copper, jacketed, and are UV laser printable. They are engineered to operate reliably within a wide temperature range from -55 °C up to 260 °C, ensuring functionality under extreme environmental conditions typical in aerospace applications. The standard also supports cable marking by hot stamp printing or inkjet, according to EN 3838, facilitating traceability and identification.
Developed under the auspices of CEN and ASD-STAN, this standard harmonizes the properties and quality assurance measures essential for cables in aerospace electrical systems, balancing durability, performance, and ease of marking. It is a product standard complementing related specifications on cable materials, constructions, and testing protocols.
Key Topics
- Cable Types: Single-core and multicore electrical cables with screened (braided) nickel-plated copper conductors.
- Operating Temperature Range: Effective performance from -55 °C to 260 °C.
- Materials and Construction:
- Cores comply with EN 2267-003.
- Braided screen made with nickel-plated copper according to EN 2083.
- Outer jacket consists of polyimide and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) layers, coated with fluorocarbon for enhanced durability and UV laser printability.
- Cores numbered from 1 to 4, twisted according to EN 2235; fillers not permitted.
- Marking and Identification: Supports UV laser printing with options for hot stamp or inkjet in line with EN 3838 to ensure long-lasting, clear cable identification.
- Required Characteristics and Tests: Includes visual examination, ohmic resistance, voltage proof, insulation & surface resistance, accelerated aging, thermal shock, bending, cold bend testing, flammability, thermal endurance, resistance to fluids, abrasion resistance, tensile testing, and smoke density.
- Quality Assurance: Adheres to aerospace quality management systems, specifically referencing EN 9133.
- Designation System: Clear identification coding based on number of cores, conductor size, and color coding per EN 2714-002.
Applications
EN 2714-008 cables are essential in the aerospace industry for ensuring safe, reliable, and high-performance electrical interconnections on aircraft. Their characteristics make them suitable for:
- On-board electrical wiring systems requiring resistance to wide temperature extremes.
- Environments necessitating screened cables to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI).
- Applications where precise, durable cable marking is critical for maintenance and safety.
- Wiring harnesses in commercial and military aircraft where adherence to aerospace safety and quality requirements is mandatory.
- Situations demanding robust jackets resistant to heat, abrasion, chemicals, and ultraviolet exposure.
By complying with EN 2714-008, aerospace manufacturers and suppliers ensure cables meet stringent operational and safety standards essential for flight-critical systems.
