Overview
EN 3375-001:2022 - “Aerospace series - Cable, electrical, for digital data transmission - Part 001: Technical specification” is a CEN/ASD-STAN technical specification that defines required characteristics, test methods, qualification and acceptance conditions for signal data transmission electrical cables used in aerospace applications. The standard updates and supersedes EN 3375-001:2018 and is intended for use by manufacturers, suppliers and integrators of aerospace data cables.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and normative references: Establishes the relationship to product and test standards such as EN 2083, EN 2084, EN 2235, EN 3475-series, EN 3838, EN 4434 and relevant ISO documents (ISO 2574, ISO 8815).
- Materials and construction: Specifies conductor, insulation, screening and outer jacket requirements; conductors must conform to EN 2083/EN 4434 and cable composition must meet the product standard. Materials must resist corrosion, mould and not attack conductors/screens.
- Cable assembly rules: Details on cabled cores (lay lengths, no splicing of cores), screened constructions (spiral, braid, strips, layer options), screen splice limits and spiral/braid angles and coverage requirements.
- Required characteristics: Cables must meet electrical, mechanical and environmental characteristics as defined in associated product standards.
- Comprehensive test program: Table-driven test matrix (Table 2) links EN 3475 test methods to application: qualification, first article inspection (FAI), production/acceptance, prior-to-delivery and periodic checks. Tests include visual, mass/dimensions, ohmic resistance, voltage proof, insulation resistance, ageing, cold bend, flammability, fluid resistance, dynamic cut-through, abrasion, notch propagation and more.
- Quality assurance and qualification: Defines qualification conditions and tests, first article inspection requirements, production routine tests, periodic tests (e.g., every three years) and acceptance criteria.
- Identification, marking and packaging: Requirements for cable marking, colours and labelling, plus delivery lengths and packaging rules.
Applications and who uses it
- Aerospace OEMs and suppliers specifying or purchasing electrical data cables for aircraft and spacecraft.
- Cable manufacturers designing and qualifying screened and jacketed digital signal cables to aerospace quality levels.
- Avionics and harness engineers selecting cables for high-speed digital links, harness design and installation.
- Quality, test and certification teams responsible for qualification testing, FAI and acceptance inspection to ensure in-service reliability.
- Procurement and compliance personnel using the standard to reference contractual requirements.
