Overview

EN ISO 2419:2024 - Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Specimen and test piece conditioning (ISO 2419:2024) specifies how to condition leather specimens and test pieces in controlled atmospheres prior to physical and mechanical testing. Adopted by CEN as EN ISO 2419:2024, this standard is applicable to all types of dry leather and replaces the 2012 edition. Conditioning is required to achieve uniform moisture and dimensional stability so test results are reproducible and comparable.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Conditioning of leather for physical and mechanical testing in standard atmospheres; applies to dry leather.
  • Reference standard atmosphere: 23.0 °C and 50.0 % RH.
  • Alternative atmospheres:
    • Specific: 20.0 °C / 65.0 % RH
    • Tropical: 27.0 °C / 65.0 % RH
    • Alternatives are permitted only by agreement; in disputes use the reference atmosphere.
  • Tolerances: Temperature ± 2.0 °C; relative humidity ± 5.0 %.
  • Conditioning procedure:
    • Keep specimens/test pieces in one of the standard atmospheres.
    • Support specimens to allow free air access to all surfaces and keep air in motion around them.
    • Minimum conditioning time: 24 hours for dry leather. Leather with high moisture content must be dried before conditioning.
  • Testing: When required by the individual test method, perform testing in the same atmosphere used for conditioning.
  • Test report requirements: Must reference ISO 2419:2024 and include climate conditions used, any alternative atmosphere details, deviations from procedures, and the date of the test.

Practical applications and users

  • Ensures consistent, repeatable leather test results by standardizing pre-test environment.
  • Who uses it:
    • Leather testing laboratories and quality-control labs
    • Tanneries and leather manufacturers
    • OEMs and brands that specify leather performance
    • R&D departments developing leather treatments or finishes
    • Certification bodies and compliance assessors
  • Typical applications:
    • Preparing specimens for tensile, tear, flexing, elongation and other physical/mechanical tests
    • Establishing baseline conditions for comparative testing of treatments, coatings, or processing changes
    • Contract testing where agreed conditioning parameters are part of specifications
