Laboratory furniture - Recommendations for design and installation - Part 5: Services distribution carriers

This document is applicable to biology, chemistry and physics laboratories where research, preparative, analytical, process activities take place and which can involve work with hazardous substances, including higher education (college and university teaching and post-graduate research).
This document does not cover the requirements of schools, i.e. precollege/pre-university (refer to EN 13150), or highly specialist laboratories which need very specific, bespoke solutions to enable them to function.
This document specifies requirements for various types of services distribution carriers typically used in combination with laboratory bench types as covered in the EN 14056 series. This document gives guidelines for all parties involved in the planning, design, manufacture, installation, testing of a new laboratory or in the refurbishment of an existing laboratory.

provision. Services may also be delivered via a separate overhead delivery system.
Note 2 to entry: A laboratory bench may be fixed to the building structure (e.g. wall or floor) or may be free-
standing (not fixed to the building structure).

4 Services distribution carriers
4.1 Typical services for distribution
Typical services for distribution can comprise but are not restricted to the following:
1) Water (different sorts) and steam;
2) Waste liquids;
3) Gases and vacuum;
4) Electrical supply;
5) Communication supply;
6) Local air, e.g. fume and vapour, extraction;
with necessary support frames, mountings, outlets, supply lines and wall, floor or ceiling fixings.
Service supply lines can be routed from the floor, from the wall or from the ceiling into the service
distribution carrier.
4.2 Typical services distribution carrier components
Typical components for services distribution carriers can comprise but are not restricted to the following:
— shelves;
— storage units;
— panelling;
— monitoring devices;
— splash guards;
— drip cups.
4.3 Services distribution carrier accessories
Possible accessories for services distribution carriers can comprise but are not restricted to the following:
— draining boards;
— holders for equipment, e.g. pipettes, paper rolls or monitors.
Services distribution carriers can also include a dedicated sanitary station which can include a sink, water
taps, eyewash, peg drainer, soap dispenser, disinfection dispenser, towel facilities.
4.4 Services distribution carrier mountings and support systems
All mountings and support systems shall have sufficient strength and rigidity to cope with any permitted
combinations of supported components and for any expected dynamic load imposed. The support system
shall be capable of controlling the line, and level of components it supports.
Within the service distribution carrier, there shall be facility to support service supply lines (pipes, cable,
conduit). These can be dedicated frameworks or surfaces to which support systems can be fixed.
4.5 Services separation and ventilation
The services distribution carrier shall include separate compartments to separate services where
necessary e.g. for safety and where proximity of electrical wires with data cabling is such that it could
cause electromagnetic interference.
Services distribution carriers shall facilitate free air movement within. Spaces which could allow gases or
condensation to amass should be eliminated. Fully enclosed (airtight) spaces should be discouraged
except where other means of ventilating the space have been incorporated.
NOTE For electrical services and for ventilation with regard to fuel gases, attention is drawn to national
regulations.
4.6 Typical types of services distribution carriers
4.6.1 Laboratory bench with integrated channel services distribution
The services distribution channel/void is integrated within a laboratory bench and is located under the
worktop, between walls/panels and rear of storage units/panels for single sided benches, or between
storage units/panels for double sided benches, see Figure 1.
Services outlets are typically located on the worktop.
The main services supply lines (pipes, cables) can be routed from the floor, from a wall or from above.
The panels to the rear of storage units located under the worktop should provide protection for services
supply lines and should be removeable for maintenance access.
