The conditions described do not always correspond to the optimal conditions allowing the occurance of the maximum value of biodegradation. The procedure applies to substances which are soluble at the concentration used under the test conditions, non-volatile; not significantly adsorbable on glass; not inhibitory to the test micro-organisms at the concentration chosen for the test.

Diese Internationale Norm beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung der vollständigen biologischen Abbaubarkeit organischer Substanzen durch aerobe Mikroorganismen bei einer vorgegebenen Konzentration. Die Bedingungen, die in dieser Internationalen Norm beschrieben werden, entsprechen nicht unbedingt den optimalen Bedingungen für einen maximalen biologischen Abbau.

La présente Norme internationale prescrit une méthode d'évaluation de la biodégradabilité «ultime» des composés organiques à une concentration donnée sous l'action de micro-organismes aérobies. Les conditions conventionnelles décrites dans la présente Norme internationale ne correspondent pas nécessairement dans tous les cas aux conditions optimales permettant d'atteindre le maximum de la biodégradation. La méthode s'applique à des composés organiques qui sont -- solubles à la concentration utilisée dans les conditions de l'essai (10 mg/l à 40 mg/l COD); -- non volatils, ou ayant une tension de vapeur négligeable dans les conditions de l'essai (voir note 5 en 8.3); -- non adsorbables significativement sur le verre et les boues activées (voire note 6 en 8.3); -- non inhibiteurs, à la concentration prévue pour l'essai, vis-à-vis des bactéries responsables de la biodégradation. Leur action inhibitrice éventuelle peut être mise en évidence comme indiqué en 8.3, ou par toute autre méthode de détermination de l'effet inhibiteur d'une substance vis-à-vis des bactéri 41es (voir l'ISO 8192).
