ASTM D6225/D6225M-98(2020)
(Test Method)Standard Test Method for Granule Cover of Mineral-Surfaced Roofing
Standard Test Method for Granule Cover of Mineral-Surfaced Roofing
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method is used to determine the extent of coverage of the granular surfacing over the asphaltic coating in a sample of mineral-surfaced roofing. The results determine compliance with the applicable specification requirements or may be used for comparative analysis. This test method applies to both “as manufactured” material and material that has weathered or undergone other types of exposure.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the hiding power of granules on a mineral-surfaced roofing sheet. The test is used primarily after an abrasion test has been conducted to determine the portion of asphaltic compound that has been exposed as a result of the abrasion test.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D6225/D6225M-98(2020) is a widely recognized international standard developed by ASTM International for the roofing industry. This standard specifies the test method for determining the granule cover, also referred to as hiding power, of mineral-surfaced roofing materials. It is particularly valuable for evaluating the extent of granular surfacing that covers the asphaltic coating on roofing sheets. Used both for “as manufactured” and for weathered or exposed materials, the test method ensures consistency, quality, and compliance in mineral-surfaced roofing products.
Key Topics
- Granule Coverage Assessment: The standard provides a systematic procedure to measure the percentage of asphaltic compound exposed due to granule displacement, typically following an abrasion test.
- Hiding Power: The hiding power of roofing granules is crucial for protecting the underlying asphaltic layer from environmental elements, enhancing product longevity and performance.
- Testing Procedures: The method involves the use of a magnifier, a transparency overlay grid, and an appropriate light source to visually inspect and quantify the exposed asphalt areas.
- Specimen Preparation and Measurement: Guidelines are included for cutting specimens, aligning the overlay grid, and recording results to ensure repeatability and accuracy.
- Unit Consistency: The method can be conducted using either SI units or inch-pound units, but these must not be mixed within a single test to maintain compliance and consistency.
- Safety and Regulatory Considerations: Users must adhere to appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices during the testing process.
Applications
The ASTM D6225/D6225M-98(2020) test method is employed in a range of practical scenarios, including:
- Product Quality Control: Manufacturers of mineral-surfaced roofing products use this method to verify compliance with technical specifications and ensure the even application of granules, which are vital for product durability.
- Material Comparison: The standardized approach allows for comparative analysis of roofing materials before and after environmental exposure or mechanical abrasion.
- Performance Evaluation: Roofing professionals and quality inspectors use the results to assess the potential for premature aging or degradation due to exposed asphaltic areas.
- Research and Development: R&D teams in the roofing and construction sectors use the method to test new formulations and granule application techniques.
- Specification Compliance: Results help demonstrate conformity with both national and international roofing standards, aiding in market approval and customer confidence.
Related Standards
Understanding and applying ASTM D6225/D6225M-98(2020) is enhanced by reference to related standards and guidelines, including:
- ASTM D4977/D4977M - Standard Test Method for Granule Adhesion to Mineral Surfaced Roofing by Abrasion, often performed before granule cover is assessed.
- Other ASTM Roofing Standards - Additional ASTM standards concerning bituminous materials and roofing membranes can be referenced for complementary test methods.
- International Standardization Principles - The development of ASTM D6225/D6225M aligns with WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) principles, ensuring broad international acceptance.
Practical Value
Implementing ASTM D6225/D6225M-98(2020) in quality assurance processes supports material integrity, product performance, and customer satisfaction. Its role in providing a standardized, objective measure of granule coverage makes it essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies seeking to uphold the highest standards for mineral-surfaced roofing products.
