Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Clamps for Securing SDR9 Cross-linked Polyethylene (PEX) Tubing and SDR9 Polyethylene of Raised Temperature (PE-RT) to Metal Insert and Plastic Insert Fittings

ABSTRACT
This specification covers stainless steel clamps for securing SDR9 cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing to metal insert and plastic insert fittings. All performance tests shall be performed on assemblies of fittings, clamps and PEX tubing. Clamps shall meet the material and dimensional requirements prescribed. The surfaces of the clamps shall be smooth and free of foreign material. Clamps shall be free of cracks, holes, corrosion, voids, foreign inclusions, or other defects that are visible to the unaided eye that have potential to affect the clamp integrity. Insert fittings shall be joined to PEX tubing by deforming and locking a stainless steel clamp around the outer circumference of the tubing, forcing the tubing material into annular spaces formed by the ribs on the fitting. The clamping procedure shall be as follows: slide the clamp onto the tubing, insert the ribbed end of the fitting into the end of the tubing until the tubing contacts the shoulder of the fitting or tube stop.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers stainless steel clamps for use with five sizes of insert fittings that comply with F1807 or F2159, and cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) plastic tubing that complies with F876 and for use with polyethylene of raised temperature (PE-RT) tubing that complies with Specification F2769. These clamps are intended as an alternative to the copper-alloy crimp-rings of Specifications F1807 for use in 100 psi (689.5 kPa) cold- and hot-water distribution systems operating at temperatures up to and including 180°F (82°C). Included are requirements for materials, workmanship, dimensions and marking of the stainless steel clamps; requirements for deforming the clamps; which apply to assemblies of PEX tubing and Specifications F1807 and F2159, insert fittings secured with deformed clamps per this specification.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM F2098-18 sets the specification for stainless steel clamps intended to secure SDR9 cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing and SDR9 polyethylene of raised temperature (PE-RT) tubing to metal or plastic insert fittings. This standard provides requirements for materials, workmanship, dimensions, and marking of clamps used in cold and hot water distribution systems, operating at pressures up to 100 psi and temperatures up to 180°F (82°C).

Stainless steel clamps per ASTM F2098-18 serve as an alternative to copper-alloy crimp rings, commonly used in plumbing and mechanical systems. The standard outlines procedures for assembly, clamping (with ratcheting hand tools), and inspection, ensuring secure and reliable joints in PEX and PE-RT piping systems.

Keywords: stainless steel clamps, PEX tubing, PE-RT tubing, SDR9, insert fittings, ASTM F2098-18, cold water distribution, hot water distribution

Key Topics

  • Material Requirements: Clamps must be manufactured from stainless steel compliant with ASTM A240/A240M, ensuring durability and resistance to corrosion.
  • Clamping and Assembly: The standard details the procedure for joining PEX or PE-RT tubing to fittings using stainless steel clamps. This process involves deforming and locking the clamp around the tubing, forcing it into the fitting’s ribbed spaces for a water-tight seal.
  • Workmanship and Finish: Clamps must be smooth, free from surface defects such as cracks, holes, corrosion, voids, or inclusions. Any residues from manufacturing must be compatible with system components.
  • Dimensional Requirements: The clamp dimensions-including open/closed diameters, width, and thickness-are strictly defined to ensure compatibility and proper function.
  • Marking and Identification: Each clamp, as well as its packaging, must bear permanent markings identifying the manufacturer, standard designation (ASTM F2098), lot code, and compatibility statements for fittings and tubing.
  • Quality Assurance: Manufacturers must ensure compliance through manufacturing, sampling, and testing practices. Clamps marked with “F2098” confirm conformance to all relevant requirements.

Applications

ASTM F2098-18 stainless steel clamps are critical components in modern plumbing systems for:

  • Residential and Commercial Water Distribution: Used for both hot and cold potable water in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.
  • PEX and PE-RT Tubing Installations: Suitable for applications where cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) or polyethylene of raised temperature (PE-RT) piping is chosen for flexibility, durability, and ease of installation.
  • Alternative to Metal Crimp Rings: Provides a reliable, corrosion-resistant alternative to copper-alloy crimp rings, particularly in situations where stainless steel is preferred or required by code.
  • Connection to Metal and Plastic Fittings: Ensures safe and secure joining of tubing to a wide variety of insert fittings that meet ASTM F1807 or F2159.

By adhering to ASTM F2098-18, installers and manufacturers can ensure system integrity, minimize risks of leaks and failures, and comply with regulatory and code requirements for water distribution systems.
