Standard Specification for Straight Beam Ultrasonic Examination of Rolled Steel Structural Shapes

ABSTRACT
This specification deals with the procedures and acceptance standards for straight beam, pulse echo, ultrasonic examination of rolled structural shapes. The section surfaces shall be sufficiently clean and smooth to maintain a back reflection from the opposite side of the flanges, legs and webs. Ultrasonic testing shall be made on the major surface of each flange and one major web surface. Evaluation of indications may require inspection from an opposite surface. Two levels of acceptance standards are included. Level II is intended for normal applications where freedom from gross internal discontinuities is desired, particularly in connection regions. Level I is intended for critical applications such as welded chord members used in tension loading.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the procedure and acceptance standards for straight beam, pulse echo, ultrasonic examination of rolled structural shapes having a minimum section thickness of 1/2 in. [12.5 mm]. It was developed to ensure delivery of steel structural shapes free of gross internal discontinuities such as pipe, ruptures, or laminations and is to be used whenever the inquiry, contract, order, or specification states that the shapes are to be ultrasonically examined. Two levels of acceptance standards are included. Level II is intended for normal applications where freedom from gross internal discontinuities is desired, particularly in connection regions. Level I is intended for critical applications such as welded chord members used in tension loading, where internal discontinuities could be detrimental. Level II is normally applicable unless otherwise specified in contract documents or the purchase order. Supplementary requirements for alternative scanning coverages are provided.
1.2 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM A898/A898M-17(2022) is the internationally recognized standard specification for the straight beam, pulse echo, ultrasonic examination of rolled steel structural shapes. Issued by ASTM International, this standard focuses on ensuring that steel structural members, such as beams and columns used in construction, are free from gross internal discontinuities like pipe, ruptures, or laminations. It establishes detailed procedures for ultrasonic testing (UT), equipment requirements, personnel qualifications, and two acceptance levels based on the application’s criticality.

The standard applies to rolled structural steel shapes with a minimum section thickness of 1/2 inch (12.5 mm), making it a critical document for construction, bridge-building, shipbuilding, and large-scale infrastructure projects where the integrity and reliability of steel components are paramount.

Key Topics

The key provisions and requirements of ASTM A898/A898M-17(2022) include:

  • Ultrasonic Examination Procedure
    • Specifies straight beam, pulse echo UT as the test method.
    • Major surfaces of each flange and at least one major web surface must be examined.
  • Surface Condition
    • Inspected areas must be clean and smooth enough for sufficient back reflection.
  • Equipment and Calibration
    • Requires properly calibrated ultrasonic pulse-echo equipment, with recommended frequencies between 1 MHz and 5 MHz.
    • Calibration standards use flat-bottomed holes in steel to simulate defects.
  • Personnel Qualification
    • Examiners must be qualified under ASNT SNT-TC-1A or an accepted equivalent.
  • Acceptance Standards
    • Level I: For critical applications (e.g., welded chords in tension), with more stringent criteria for defect indications.
    • Level II: For normal applications seeking freedom from gross discontinuities, particularly at connections.
  • Reporting and Marking
    • Specifies data to be reported, including indication details, test parameters, and operator identity.
    • Accepted parts are marked UT-A-898-1 (Level I) or UT-A-898-2 (Level II).

Applications

The ASTM A898/A898M standard is widely applied across sectors where high-strength steel structural shapes are essential:

  • Construction and Civil Engineering
    • Ensures beams, columns, and other load-bearing shapes are free of harmful internal flaws that could compromise safety.
  • Bridge Building
    • Used for critical components, especially those subjected to tension or vital connection regions.
  • Shipbuilding and Rolling Stock
    • Safeguards the quality of structural shapes in ships and rail vehicles, where reliability is crucial.
  • Industrial Structures
    • Applied to heavy-duty frameworks in factories, power plants, and infrastructure projects.

This standard supports contract compliance and quality assurance whenever ultrasonic testing of steel shapes is specified in project documents, procurement contracts, or regulatory requirements.

Related Standards

Several associated standards are referenced or applied alongside ASTM A898/A898M-17(2022):

  • ASTM A6/A6M: General requirements for rolled structural steel bars, plates, shapes, and sheet piling.
  • ASTM E317: Practice for evaluating performance characteristics of ultrasonic pulse-echo testing instruments and systems.
  • ASNT SNT-TC-1A: Recommended practice for personnel qualification and certification in nondestructive testing.

Utilizing ASTM A898/A898M-17(2022) in conjunction with these standards enhances the reliability and effectiveness of ultrasonic examination in steel structures, ensuring compliance with recognized international quality and safety benchmarks.
