Overview
ASTM D4615-22 - Standard Specification for n-Butyl Acetate (All Grades) sets out the quality requirements and test methods for various grades of n-butyl acetate used as solvents in paints and related coatings. Developed by ASTM International, this specification ensures that n-butyl acetate meets strict criteria for purity, chemical composition, color, and physical properties, supporting its consistent performance and safety in industrial and commercial applications.
Key Topics
- Purity and Composition: The standard outlines minimum purity levels (90-99.5% depending on grade), and specifies maximum allowable concentrations for alcohol, water, and acidity.
- Color and Odor: Limits are established for color (Platinum-Cobalt units) and odor characteristics, helping guarantee product consistency and suitability for end-use in coatings and other sensitive applications.
- Physical Properties: Requirements include specific gravity, distillation range, and nonvolatile matter content, ensuring the solvent performs as intended in manufacturing processes.
- Testing Methods: Standardized ASTM test methods must be used for evaluation, including techniques like gas chromatography, Karl Fischer titration for water content, and distillation analysis.
- Packaging and Marking: Guidelines for package sizes, carrier regulations, and marking are provided and should be agreed upon between purchaser and supplier.
- Safety and Compliance: Users are directed to consult Material Safety Data Sheets and observe applicable safety, health, and environmental regulations.
Applications
n-Butyl acetate is an important solvent in various industries, especially in:
- Paints and Coatings: Used as a primary or secondary solvent in automotive, industrial, and architectural coatings, enhancing application properties and film formation.
- Inks and Adhesives: Valued for its solvency and favorable evaporation rate, improving processability and performance.
- Chemical Manufacturing: Acts as an intermediate in producing pharmaceuticals, plastics, and other esters.
- Laboratory and Quality Control: The specified testing methods and standards ensure suppliers and users can conduct reliable, repeatable quality assessments for n-butyl acetate, supporting regulatory compliance and product safety.
Following ASTM D4615-22 helps organizations:
- Select n-butyl acetate grades tailored to specific application requirements.
- Maintain batch-to-batch consistency and product integrity.
- Satisfy regulatory and customer requirements for chemical traceability and performance.
- Reduce risks related to impurities, improper handling, or inappropriate material selection.
