Standardization request as regards ecodesign and energy labelling requirements for household dishwashers, household washing machines and household washer-dryers
General Information
The first edition of this Technical Specification provides a method for the evaluation of the rinsing effectiveness of household clothes washing machines, washer dryers and commercial washing machine. The amount of residual detergent extracted from the unstained swatches of the strips used in the washing performance test is determined. This is accomplished by measuring the ultraviolet light absorbance at the wavelength particular to linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant, a key ingredient of the detergent with a known linear relationship to the quantity of detergent mixture.
Using a concentration versus absorbance curve developed as part of this procedure, the absorbance values can then be converted into detergent concentrations, which together with the test solution mass data, yields detergent quantities.
The first edition is now widely used in many different laboratories, both manufactures and independent test labs. SWG01-08 received feedback that the test burden is very high, which increases the costs and lowers the ability to test many machines in parallel. With the second edition, it is planned to simplify the procedure to improve the output of this method and decrease the test costs.

IEC 60704-2-4:2011 These particular requirements apply to single unit electrical washing machines and the washing and spinning function of combined appliances for household and similar use and to spin extractors for household and similar use. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (2001). Main changes are: - measurement uncertainty and standard deviations are taken into account, - definitions of standard test load and standard test program are modified, - test enclosure was replaced by common test enclosure defined in Part 1 and - information to be reported is modified. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60704-1:2010.

IEC 60436:2015 applies to electric dishwashers for household and similar use that are supplied with hot and/or cold water. The object is to state and define the principal performance characteristics of electric dishwashers for household and similar use and to describe the standard methods of measuring these characteristics. This standard is concerned neither with safety nor with minimum performance requirements. This edition constitutes a technical revision and includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Addition of a specification of the reference dishwasher G1222, addition of the microwave oven 752C, inclusion of standby/low power modes and updated cutlery and tableware items. b) Combined cleaning and drying: combining the cleaning and drying performance evaluations into one test, along with the energy and water consumption evaluation, prevents an opportunity for circumvention if tests were performed separately. A dishwasher can detect whether soil is present (cleaning evaluation) or not (drying evaluation) and adjust the cycle to favour performance; combining the tests addresses this. c) New dish load items: new dish load items were incorporated which reflect consumer use. New items are: stainless pots, coffee mugs, melamine plastic items, and glass bowl. The new load items provide different shapes which challenge a dishwasher water spray patterns and provide additional surfaces for soil removal assessment. d) Detergent: a new detergent "D" is specified which mirrors current tablet formulations available on the market. Detergent type D is phosphate free, with percarbonate instead of perborate bleach and more active enzymes. e) Repeatability and reproducibility improvements. f) Addition of annexes for the evaluation of soil sensing programmes, rinsing performance, dishwasher filtration and of an annex on the inlet water temperature influence on energy consumption.

IEC 60704-2-3:2017 is intended to be used in conjunction with the third edition (2010) of IEC 60704-1, Household and similar electrical appliances - Test code for the determination of airborne acoustical noise - Part 1: General requirements. The relevant text of Part 1 as amended by this standard establishes the test code for dishwashers. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) it doesn’t contain the description of an appropriate test enclosure because the test enclosure has been incorporated in IEC 60704-1:2010, Annex B; b) the values of standard deviations of sound power levels determined according to this part are given in Clause 1; c) to prevent an appliance being programmed to recognize the test cycles, and reacting specifically to them, in this new edition an artificial soil is used in addition to the unsoiled load and the rinse aid container has to be filled. This artificial soil successive may build up a film on the load. Therefore, detergent also has to be used. An initial test has shown that no foam is to be expected. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60704-1:2010.

IEC 60456:2010(E) specifies methods for measuring the performance of clothes washing machines for household use, with or without heating devices utilising cold and/or hot water supply. It also deals with appliances for water extraction by centrifugal force (spin extractors) and is applicable to appliances for both washing and drying textiles (washer-dryers) with respect to their washing related functions. This International Standard also covers washing machines which specify the use of no detergent for normal use. This edition includes the following significant changes from the previous edition. Modified test load mass requirement for cases where: - rated capacity of test machine is not declared; - introduction of soft water option; - expanded stain/soil set; - improved method of loading and folding test load items to better suit vertical axis, horizontal axis and twin tub systems; - revised and amended reference machine specifications reflecting full qualification on new Electrolux Wascator CLS; - new reference programmes for lower temperature and vertical axis systems; - refined rinsing efficiency method; - introduction of low power modes "OFF" and "Left On"; - new annex regarding uncertanity of measurements.

This assumption is done, because in the frame of this test it is not possible to determine the exact amount of LAS involved, even in the concentration curves, but only the amount of detergent used. On the textiles, this linear relationship is not given, but it is nevertheless used to express the amount of LAS as determined by UV light absorbance measurements in terms of a detergent amount.

IEC 62512:2012 provides a globally applicable and agreed method to test the washing and drying function of washer-dryers. Although this standard is based on IEC 61121:2012 on tumble dryers and IEC 60456:2010 on clothes washers, it specifies the conditions needed to test the combined function of washing and drying. The main elements of this standard are: - the definition of the loads to be tested in continuous and interrupted operation cycles; - the method for testing automatic and not automatic operation of the drying cycles; - the way to handle the load for interrupted operation cycles; - the correction to be applied to test results for continuous and interrupted operation cycles.

This document provides a measurement and evaluation method for the determination of the representative maximum temperature reached inside the base load during the washing cycle of a washing machine or washer-dryer. The mean maximum temperature within the base load is measured with three temperature sensors, which are attached to towels and/or pillowcases placed in different, representative locations inside the drum. This document does not provide a method for measuring a temperature for the evaluation of hygiene performance.
