TIT - Tobaco and tobaco products

This document specifies the atmosphere for the conditioning and testing of samples of tobacco and tobacco products.
It is primarily applicable to cigarettes; however, if not specified differently in other ISO standards, it can also be applied to tobacco, other tobacco products, and materials used in the manufacture of tobacco products for which prior conditioning is necessary. Standards for the conditioning and testing of other forms of tobacco, tobacco products, and materials can refer to all or part of this document.

This document specifies a method for the gas-chromatographic determination of nicotine in total particulate matter from the mainstream smoke. The smoking of cigarettes and the collection of mainstream smoke are carried out according to ISO 4387.
NOTE ISO 20778 and ISO 22253 provide the determination method of nicotine in smoke with an intense smoking regime.

This document specifies a method for the determination of water content by the Karl Fischer method. It is applicable to raw tobacco as well as tobacco taken from finished products. The method is suitable for water contents ranging from a mass fraction of at least 2 % to 55 %.

This document specifies additional test methods for routine analytical cigarette-smoking machines intended to check the conformity of these machines with ISO 3308 and ISO 20778.
It only establishes additional test methods for smoking machines and does not deal with actual smoking, which is described in other International Standards.
It is composed of four sections relating to
— the determination of pressure drop (Clause 4);
— the determination of significant puff profile parameters (Clause 5);
— the verification of restricted smoking (Clause 6);  
— the description of the soap film bubble flowmeter for the determination of the puff volume (Clause 7).
NOTE There are more possibilities for determining the aforementioned parameters. Systems giving the same results and accuracies can be used. The certificate of conformity with this standard can be obtained from the machine manufacturer.

This document specifies a method for the determination of air permeability (AP).
It is applicable to materials used as cigarette papers, filter plug wrap and filter joining paper, including materials having an oriented permeable zone or discrete permeable zones where the measured permeability is in excess of 10 cm3·(min−1·cm−2) at 1 kPa. In addition, it is applicable to banded cigarette papers, with bands of a width of at least 4 mm.
NOTE For an estimate of the air permeability of materials outside the scope of this document, see Note 3 in 5.1.2 and 7.6.1.4.

This document specifies the general principles to be applied when sampling batches of raw tobacco in order to assess either
— the mean value of one or more of its characteristics, or
— the heterogeneity of one or more of its characteristics.
Manufactured tobacco products, including products intended for sale or distribution, are specifically not included in the scope of this document.
This document is applicable to the sampling of batches of raw tobacco of the following types:
a) leaf tobacco:  
flue cured;
air cured;
sun cured;
fire cured;  
b) pretreated raw tobacco:  
which has undergone fermentation (in packages not intended for retail or wholesale sales or distribution, in bulk, in chambers);
which has been partially or completely stemmed;
which is in the form of stems;
which is in the form of waste and remnants;
which has been reconstituted in the form of strips.

This document specifies a method for the gas-chromatographic determination of water in total particulate matter from the mainstream smoke. The smoking of cigarettes and collection of mainstream smoke are normally carried out in accordance with ISO 4387. However, the method of this document is also applicable to the determination of water in total particulate matter from the mainstream smoke obtained by non-standard smoking.
NOTE In countries not in a position to use the gas-chromatographic method, the determination of water in total particulate matter from the mainstream smoke is performed using the Karl Fischer method (see ISO 10362-2). In such cases, values obtained for water in total particulate matter from the mainstream smoke are used with the addition of a note made in the expression of the results.

This document specifies methods for the determination of total particulate matter and for the subsequent determination of nicotine-free dry particulate matter present in the smoke from cigarettes generated and collected using a routine analytical smoking machine.

This document specifies a method for the determination of ventilation which is applicable to cigarettes.

ISO 6565:2015 describes a method for the measurement of the draw resistance of cigarettes and pressure drop of filter rods, and specifies the standard conditions applicable to such measurements.
It is applicable to cigarettes, filter rods, and, by extension, to cylindrical tobacco products similar to cigarettes.

ISO 2971:2013 specifies a non contact, optical method of gauging for determination of the mean, minimum and maximum diameters and the ovality (or roundness) of rod-shaped objects with a nominally circular or oval cross section that is convex curvilinear. The method is applicable, in particular, to cigarettes and filter rods.

ISO 8243:2013 specifies two methods of providing representative samples of a population of cigarettes manufactured for sale. Different procedures are specified according to whether sampling is undertaken at the point of sale or at a factory.
Sampling "at one point in time" provides for appraisal of the chosen properties of the cigarettes on that occasion. Sampling is carried out within as short a period as possible.
Sampling "over a period of time" provides for on-going appraisals. It can be considered for practical purposes as a series of samples each taken "at one point in time".
ISO 8243:2013 provides information on the statistical basis for the treatment of data and gives estimates, based on practical experience, of the typical confidence intervals for nicotine-free dry particulate matter (NFDPM), nicotine and CO yields which may be found when a product is sampled in accordance with ISO 8243:2013 and smoked in accordance with the procedures specified in ISO 3308, ISO 3402, ISO 4387, ISO 8454, ISO 10315, ISO 10362‑1 and ISO 10362‑2.

ISO 10362-2:2013 specifies the use of the Karl Fischer method for the determination of water in cigarette smoke condensates. The smoking of cigarettes and collection of mainstream smoke are normally carried out in accordance with ISO 4387. However, the method is also applicable to the determination of water in smoke condensates obtained by non-standard smoking.

ISO 3308:2012:
defines smoking parameters and specifies the standard conditions to be provided for the routine analytical machine smoking of cigarettes;
specifies the requirements for a routine analytical smoking machine complying with the standard conditions.  
Annex A specifies the ambient air velocities surrounding cigarettes in a routine analytical smoking machine, the mechanical design of the enclosures immediately surrounding them, and the methods of air velocity measurement including the location where air velocity is measured.
Annex B describes, as an example, the special characteristics of a typical smoking machine incorporating a piston type of puffing mechanism.
Annex C includes a diagram of a puff profile and illustrates definitions and standard conditions.

ISO/TR 22305 records the data and conclusions from a review of international collaborative studies to establish the tolerance for checks of the carbon monoxide yields declared by cigarette manufacturers for their products, as specified in ISO 8243.

ISO 8454:2007 specifies a method for the determination of carbon monoxide (CO) in the vapour phase of cigarette smoke.

ISO/TS 7821:2005 provides a practical framework for the operations of dividing a lot (not necessarily homogeneous) of tobacco or tobacco products into several similar samples intended for collaborative studies, either within or between laboratories.

Specifies a method for the measurement of the particle size of strips of leaf tobacco. Samples of strips are separated into five particle sizes by passing them over four screens.

This method is also applicable to the residues from maleic hydrazide sucker control agents used on tobacco crops. Annex A describes optional extra procedure such as acid pre-digestion and carbon clean-up, and Annex B includes some notes on the distillation procedure.

Specifies a reference method for the determination of alkaloids, expressed as nicotine. The method is applicable to unmanufactured tobacco, manufactured tobacco and tobacco products. It is based on submission of the sample to steam distillation, spectrometric measurement of the absorption of the distillate and calculation of the percentage content of nicotine.

Covers residues from pesticides of the dithiocarbamate type commonly used on tobacco crops. Describes reagents and apparatus for the spectrometric measurement and gives information on the expression of results and the data to be included in the test report. The distallation apparatus to be used in the test is shown as an annex.

Specifies an empirical, quick and practical method which relates only to smoke condensate. The results should not be interpreted with respect to any particular constituent of the smoke condensate.

Specifies a direct and a indirect method. Describes the principle, the reagents, the apparatus, the sampling, the test procedures, the expression of results, and the contents of the test report. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (1977).

ISO 10315:2013 specifies a method for the gas-chromatographic determination of nicotine in cigarette smoke condensates. The smoking of cigarettes and the collection of mainstream smoke are normally carried out in accordance with ISO 4387.

ISO 6488:2004 specifies a method for the determination of water content by the Karl Fischer method. It is applicable to raw tobacco as well as tobacco taken from finished products. The method is suitable for water contents ranging from a mass fraction of at least 2 % to 55 %.

ISO 2965:2009 specifies a method for the determination of air permeability (AP).
It is applicable to materials used as cigarette papers, filter plug wrap and filter joining paper, including materials having an oriented permeable zone or discrete permeable zones where the measured permeability is in excess of 10 cm3 . (min-1 . cm-2) at 1 kPa. In addition, it is applicable to banded cigarette papers, with bands no narrower than 4 mm.

ISO 7210:2013 specifies additional test methods for routine analytical cigarette-smoking machines intended to check the conformity of these machines with Clause 4 of ISO 3308.

This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of ventilation which is applicable to cigarettes.

ISO 6565:2011 describes a method for the measurement of the draw resistance of cigarettes and pressure drop of filter rods, and specifies the standard conditions applicable to such measurements.
ISO 6565:2011 is applicable to cigarettes, filter rods and, by extension, to cylindrical tobacco products similar to cigarettes.

ISO 10185:2004 provides terms and definitions used in the production, processing and testing of tobacco and tobacco products.
It contains many definitions from International Standards on tobacco and tobacco products, including oriental tobacco and leaf tobacco.

Specifies a method for determination of form and size characteristics of oriental leaf tobacco from transplanting until used as raw material for cigarette manufacture. Applies to all oriental varieties.

Specifies the baling styles and specifications for manipulated oriental leaf tobacco.

The principle of the method specified is dissolving the smoke condensate from the mainstream smoke in a solvent and determination of the water content of an aliquot of the solution by titration with standardized Karl Fischer reagent. The smoking of cigarettes and collection of mainstream smoke are normally carried out in accordance with ISO 4387. However, the method is also applicable to the determination of water in smoke condensates obtained by non-standard smoking.

Specifies the principle, the apparatus, the sample preparation, the preparation of the powder tablet, and the expression of results. Shows the device for making powder tablets (Annex A).
