Overview

EN 12697-23:2017 (CEN) specifies a laboratory test method for determining the indirect (splitting) tensile strength - ITS - of cylindrical bituminous specimens. The method measures the peak diametrical load to calculate tensile stress at failure and is widely used for strength assessment and for conditioning-based water sensitivity tests (see EN 12697-12 linkage). The standard covers specimen dimensions, apparatus, conditioning, test procedure, calculation and reporting requirements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Specimen types & size
    • Cylindrical specimens (laboratory compacted or cored) with diameters of 80, 100, 120, 150 or 160 mm (tolerances apply).
    • Specimen height typically 35–75 mm. Maximum aggregate size limits are specified per specimen diameter (e.g., 80 mm diameter ≤11 mm aggregate; 150/160 mm ≤40 mm).
  • Number of specimens
    • Minimum three specimens per sample/condition.
  • Apparatus
    • Compression testing (Marshall-type or similar) with a recommended minimum capacity of 28 kN (higher capacity may be required for stiff samples or large diameters).
    • Loading strips of hardened steel with curvature matching specimen radius; specific strip widths are given per specimen diameter.
    • Load measuring device accurate to ±0.2 kN.
  • Conditioning
    • Thermal conditioning in a thermostatic water bath (specimens protected by sealed soft plastic bags) or air chamber.
    • Storage before testing: 48 hours to 42 days at ≤25 °C.
    • Conditioning time: ≥2 h for specimens <150 mm diameter; ≥4 h for specimens ≥150 mm.
  • Test procedure & environment
    • Loading rate: constant deformation rate of 50 ± 2 mm/min (after a short transitory period <20% of loading time).
    • Default test temperature 10 ± 2 °C (other temperatures +5 °C to +25 °C may be used depending on objectives).
    • Complete test within 2 minutes after removal from conditioning.
  • Calculation & reporting
    • ITS expressed in kilopascals (kPa); ITS is calculated from peak load and specimen dimensions per the formula in the standard.
    • Report specimen type, dimensions, test temperature, failure mode (clear tensile break / deformation / combination), and ITS results.

Applications and users

  • Used for pavement materials testing, mix design verification, and quality control of asphalt/bituminous mixtures.
  • Fundamental for water sensitivity assessment when paired with appropriate conditioning (EN 12697-12 references ITS).
  • Typical users: pavement engineers, materials laboratories, contractors, road authorities, and researchers evaluating tensile cracking resistance and mix performance.
