Thermal insulation products for buildings - External thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) based on mineral wool - Specification
This European Standard specifies the requirements for factory made products for external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) based on mineral wool, delivered as a kit, and used as thermal insulation for buildings.
The standard describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, marking and labelling.
ETICS are applied to external surfaces of new or existing walls and/or soffits to improve the thermal insulation. ETICS include special fittings (base profiles, corner profiles, etc.) to connect them to adjacent building structures (apertures, corners, parapets, etc.). ETICS give protection against weathering and improve the appearance of the buildings. They do not contribute the stability of the wall and/or soffits on which they are installed.
The standard covers systems where the thermal insulation material is required for the load transfer to the substrate.
This standard covers systems with a declared thermal resistance equal to or greater than 1 m²×K/W.
The requirements from national regulations concerning the mechanical resistance and stability of ETICS should be taken into account.
This standard does not cover the strength between the ETICS and the building surface to which it shall be fixed, i. e. the substrate.

Overview
SIST EN 13500:2003, developed by CEN, specifies the requirements for factory-made products used in external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) based on mineral wool. These systems are delivered as kits and serve as thermal insulation solutions for buildings, applied to exterior walls or soffits of both new and existing constructions. The standard ensures that ETICS comprising mineral wool deliver reliable thermal performance, weather protection, and aesthetic improvements while aligning with national regulations on mechanical resistance and stability.
The standard details product characteristics, test methods, marking, and labelling requirements. ETICS covered by SIST EN 13500:2003 are primarily used for improving energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and the exterior durability of buildings.
Key Topics
System Composition: ETICS based on mineral wool typically include:
- Adhesive and/or mechanical fixing devices
- Mineral wool insulation boards
- Base coat(s) with reinforcement (e.g., glass fibre mesh)
- Finishing material for weather protection and aesthetics
- Special fittings for structural connections (base profiles, corner profiles, anchors, rails)
Product Characteristics: The standard specifies the essential qualities ETICS must possess, such as:
- Minimum declared thermal resistance (≥ 1 m²·K/W)
- Adequate bond strength, pull-off resistance, and mechanical stability
- Performance under thermal and moisture loads
Testing & Conformity:
- Clear procedures and frequencies for product and component testing
- Requirements for factory production control
- Evaluation of conformity according to referenced European standards
Marking and Labelling:
- All ETICS components must be clearly labelled with manufacturer data, product identity, production dates, and specification levels for traceability and compliance
Applications
Building Renovation and Energy Efficiency: ETICS based on mineral wool are widely used for upgrading the thermal performance of existing buildings, supporting compliance with energy efficiency regulations.
New Construction: Architects and builders specify ETICS to enhance the thermal envelope of new residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, helping to reduce heating and cooling costs.
Weather Protection and Aesthetics: ETICS protect external walls and soffits from weathering, increase durability, and provide the flexibility to improve building appearance through various finishing options.
Fire Safety and Sound Insulation: Mineral wool-based ETICS offer enhanced fire resistance and also contribute to acoustic insulation, supporting broader building comfort and safety goals.
Related Standards
SIST EN 13500:2003 makes reference to several connected European and international standards, which address specific properties and test methods, including:
- EN 13162: Specification for factory-made mineral wool products for building insulation
- EN 13501-1: Fire classification of construction products and building elements
- EN 13494: Determination of the tensile bond strength of adhesives and base coats to insulation material
- EN 1062-3: Liquid water permeability of coating materials
- EN ISO 10456 / EN ISO 6946: Calculation methods for declared and design thermal values
In specifying or installing ETICS, users should ensure that all components comply not only with SIST EN 13500:2003 but also with these referenced standards for overall system performance and regulatory compliance.
By adhering to SIST EN 13500:2003, manufacturers, specifiers, and contractors can guarantee robust, safe, and efficient thermal insulation solutions that extend the life and comfort of buildings, combining proven product requirements with systematic quality assurance and clear product information.
