Overview
EN 16382:2026 - issued by CEN - defines a laboratory test method for measuring the pull-through resistance of plate and spiral anchors through thermal insulation products used in building applications. The standard specifies the required equipment, specimen preparation, test conditions and the procedure to apply a direct tensile load perpendicular to the insulation surface until failure. It is intended for product evaluation, quality control and performance comparison of fixation systems used in external insulation and cladding systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle: Determination of pull‑through resistance by applying a tensile load to a tension plate glued to the insulation while the anchor is fixed on the opposite side.
- Apparatus and fixtures: Rigid square templates with circular openings, clamps, a rigid circular tension plate (self‑aligning connection), and a suitable clamping device or concrete substrate for anchor fixation.
- Adhesives and separation: Use of glue compatible with the insulation and tension plate (e.g., solvent‑free epoxy or polyurethane). Anchors are separated from the tension plate by a non‑adhesive foil so the glue does not affect the anchor.
- Dimensional and setup rules: Template and tension plate dimensions relate to anchor plate diameter and insulation thickness (tension plate diameter typically specified as anchor plate diameter minus 10 mm). Templates must be sized so the breaking cone is fully captured and at least 25 mm from the circular recess edge.
- Test conditioning and machine: Specimens conditioned at (23 ± 3) °C and 50 ± 10 % RH. Tensile testing machine with constant crosshead speed of (20 ± 1) mm/min, force measurement accuracy ≤ 1 % and continuous load–displacement recording.
- Specimens and statistics: Test positions include middle area, joint, edge/corner and limited width setups. At least 5 valid test specimens are required for characteristic strength determination.
- Failure evaluation: Record failure load, calculate pull‑through resistance and measure the breaking cone geometry (distance r).
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of anchors and thermal insulation products for verifying anchor compatibility and performance.
- Accredited test laboratories performing type‑testing and quality control of ETICS and insulation fixings.
- Specifiers, façade engineers and building product certifiers who need standardized data on anchor pull‑through capacity to inform design and compliance.
- Research and product development teams optimizing anchor plates, spiral anchors and insulation materials.

4 Principle
The pull-through resistance of a plate or spiral anchor through thermal insulation is determined by a
direct tensile load perpendicular to the surface of the thermal insulation. The tensile load is applied by
means of a tension plate glued to the test area of the thermal insulation.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Experimental setup
Figure 1 shows the principle of the test setup when using a plate anchor (Figure 1 a) or a spiral anchor
(Figure 1 b).
NOTE In Clause 5, the numbers between brackets refer to the keys of Figure 1 to Figure 3.
The plate or spiral anchor (1) which is to be tested is pulled through the thermal insulation (3). The edges
of the thermal insulation are fixed by two square templates with a centric circular opening (2) and clamps
(7). The anchor is positioned in the centre of the sample according to the manufacturer's instructions.
The circular tension plate (5) is glued (6) onto the thermal insulation. The anchor is covered previously
with a non-adhesive foil. The tension load is introduced to the thermal insulation by the circular tension
plate which fits into the circular opening of the template. The anchorage area of the plate anchor is fixed
by a suitable device. The tension load is exerted until failure.

5.2 Glue
The glue shall be suitable for the thermal insulation and for the tension plate (e. g. solvent-free epoxy or
polyurethane based). The glue shall not influence the mechanical properties of the insulation.
5.3 Template
The square templates with circular openings shall be rigid. Test results are valid if every distance of the
circular recess to the breaking cone is at least 25 mm.
