Overview
EN 1929-4:2005 (CEN) specifies construction, performance, testing and safety requirements for general-purpose self-service basket trolleys that include additional goods carrying facility(ies), with or without a child carrying facility, when intended to be used on passenger conveyors (escalators/treadways) and operated by a user. The standard complements other parts of the EN 1929 series and aligns trolley safety requirements with escalator/passenger conveyor rules (EN 115).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Basket trolleys with extra goods carrying facilities for use on passenger conveyors; accompanied use only.
- Maximum total loading mass: 160 kg when used on a passenger conveyor.
- Wheel size: Minimum wheel diameter 120 mm for conveyor use.
- Clearance: Overall trolley width must be at least 400 mm less than the nominal conveyor width (space between trolley and passenger conveyor).
- Maintaining device: Trolleys must have a device that keeps them in a stopped position without outside intervention when on the conveyor.
- Stability tests:
- Longitudinal stability: no overturning up to and including 16° (ascending/descending).
- Lateral stability: no overturning up to and including 10° (sideways).
- Exit/toppling test: no overturning up to and including 18° for trolleys exiting combs; specific load conditions apply depending on goods-carrying facility position.
- Tests use a tilting platform with a 20 mm high strip as limit stop, performed at room temperature with swivelling castors placed in the least stable position.
- Marking & instructions:
- Pictogram of at least 20 × 20 mm affixed to the handle.
- Identification plate with manufacturer name/address, commercial name and volume, calculated volume (litres), maximum load(s) (including child seat max load 15 kg for type D), month/year of manufacture, and the standard reference number.
- Referenced documents: EN 115; EN 1929-1/2/3; ISO 3864 (safety signs).
