Overview

EN 1929-7:2005 (CEN) is the European standard that sets construction, performance, testing and safety requirements for general-purpose self‑service basket trolleys fitted with baby and/or child carrying facilities. It applies to manually driven basket trolleys (not intended for passenger conveyors) that conform to EN 1929-1 and covers arrangements with one or two baby and/or child carrying facilities. The standard helps manufacturers, retailers and test laboratories ensure safe use of basket trolleys in self‑service stores.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Types covered: four main configurations - one baby facility (AK), two baby facilities (AKK), one baby + one child facility (BK), two child facilities (BB).
  • Maximum occupant weights: baby facility and child facility limits are specified (use labelling - see Marking).
  • Restraint systems:
    • Baby facilities must have an integral harness; child facilities must have a waist belt.
    • All restraint straps must have a minimum width of 20 mm.
    • Anchoring points and fastenings must withstand specified loads and must not fail in testing (referenced EN 1888 tests).
  • Stability and positioning:
    • Stability tests simulate occupant loads (e.g., a 12 kg test cylinder for baby simulation) to verify longitudinal and transverse stability.
    • Baby back support angle requirement: testing device verifies an inclination α ≥ 10° and < 45° to the horizontal.
  • Durability and endurance:
    • Endurance testing of basket and baby back support under repeated loading as per EN 1929-1 with additional specified loads for baby support.
  • Parking device:
    • Required for AKK, BK and BB types to secure an unattended second child during loading/unloading.
    • Operational requirement: after endurance testing the parking device must function and resist push/pull forces (document specifies a minimum longitudinal force threshold).
  • Nesting and labeling:
    • Rules to prevent injury during trolley nesting: either clear indication to remove babies before nesting or fixed baby facility during nesting.
    • Markings must be durable and visible, include maximum baby (9 kg) and child (15 kg) weights, restraint and parking device instructions, and supervision warnings.
  • Maintenance:
    • Manufacturer instructions must include commissioning, maintenance, repairs and periodic testing frequency (at least every six months).

Applications and who uses the standard

  • Manufacturers and designers of basket trolleys for supermarkets and retail chains use EN 1929-7 to design compliant baby/child carrying features.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors use the standard’s test methods (stability, endurance, restraint checks) for certification and product safety validation.
  • Retail procurement, safety officers and facility managers use the standard for supplier specifications, safe‑use labelling and maintenance schedules.
  • Regulators and standards committees reference EN 1929-7 for harmonized safety rules across CEN member states.
