Overview
EN 60155:1995/A2:2007 (IEC 60155:1993/A2:2006) is a CENELEC amendment concerning glow-starters for fluorescent lamps. This amendment updates the original European/IEC standard and adds technical guidance on materials and good practice for starter construction. It is intended for manufacturers, designers and test laboratories involved with starters, lamp holders and luminaires that use fluorescent lamp starters.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and status
- Amendment A2 was approved by CENELEC (2006‑12‑01) and applies as part of EN 60155:1995.
- Materials for starter contacts (Annex D - normative)
- Starter contacts must be made of materials suitable for current‑carrying parts with regard to mechanical strength, electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.
- Examples of suitable metals include:
- Copper or alloys with ≥58% Cu (rolled sheet) or ≥50% Cu (other parts)
- Stainless steel with ≥13% Cr and ≤0.09% C
- Steel with electroplated zinc per ISO 2081, coating ≥5 μm (ISO service condition No. 1)
- Steel with Ni+Cr plating per ISO 1456, coating ≥20 μm (ISO service condition No. 2)
- Steel with tin plating per ISO 2093, coating ≥12 μm (ISO service condition No. 2)
- Pure nickel (≥99%) and aluminium/alloy with hardness ≥ HB 100
- Plastic materials for starter enclosures (Annex E - informative)
- Guidance on selecting plastics considering continuous and transient temperatures, UV/visible radiation, mechanical stress and proximity to lamps (including compact fluorescent types).
- Highlights failure modes (e.g., heat + UV can embrittle polypropylene) and the effect of fillers, flame retardants and manufacturing on material properties.
- Normative references
- Adds ISO 1456, ISO 2081 and ISO 2093 as referenced standards for plating and coatings.
Practical applications
- Design and manufacture of glow-starters, starter holders and combined lampholder-starter assemblies.
- Selection of contact metals and enclosure plastics to ensure reliable electrical performance and long service life in varying ambient conditions.
- Product conformity assessment, type testing and quality control for fluorescent-lamp equipment.
- Guidance for luminaire designers to avoid thermal or UV‑related material degradation in enclosed luminaires or when starters are close to lamp walls.
Who should use this standard
- Starter and lamp manufacturers
- Luminaire designers and OEMs
- Material engineers specifying contacts and enclosures
- Test laboratories, certification bodies and compliance officers
- Procurement and quality assurance teams sourcing starter components
