Overview

EN 62035:2014/A1:2019 is the CENELEC adoption of IEC 62035:2014/A1:2016 and provides safety specifications for discharge lamps (excluding fluorescent lamps). This amendment updates the 2014 base standard with clarified requirements for insulation, creepage and clearance, electrical strength, batch testing and certification support. It is intended to support compliance with the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) via the informative Annex ZZ.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Safety requirements cover discharge lamps other than fluorescent types; national adoptions (e.g., SIST EN 62035:2015/A1:2019) are aligned with the amendment.
  • Creepage and clearance: New provisions specify minimum creepage distances tied to cap types. Lamps with cap codes such as GX8.5, GX10, GU8.5, PGZ12, PGZX18 reference relevant maximum voltages and pulse voltages (e.g., 305 V and 5 kV pulse; 5.9 kV pulse for PGZX18). For PGZ12 and GX8.5, a minimum creepage/clearance of 6.5 mm applies.
  • Insulation resistance: Measured at 500 V d.c.; minimum values updated to 4 MΩ for caps listed in the amendment’s table and 2 MΩ for other caps.
  • Dielectric (electric strength) test: Specified a.c. test voltages of 3 000 V for caps in Table 7 and 1 500 V for others, applied for 1 minute; test procedure requires initial application at half voltage then rapid increase to full value.
  • Cap and luminaire interaction: Metal parts of lamps not connected to live parts (e.g., metal cap shells) must have reinforced or double insulation; guidance is included for use in Class II luminaires where additional insulation may be required.
  • Environmental protection: Lamps should be protected from direct water contact when used in luminaires rated IPX1 or higher.
  • Quality, batch testing and certification: Amendment refines batch sampling, whole-production assessment and adds Annex K with requirements for manufacturer records, sampling plans and acceptable quality levels (AQL) for certification.

Applications and who uses it

  • Lamp manufacturers - design, testing and CE marking of discharge lamps to meet safety requirements.
  • Luminaire designers and OEMs - ensure compatibility and safe installation, especially when using lamps with metal cap shells or in Class II luminaires.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - perform insulation, dielectric and batch tests; apply Annex K for certification assessments.
  • Regulatory and compliance teams - use Annex ZZ mapping to the Low Voltage Directive for conformity assessment and market surveillance.
