Overview
EN 16842-8:2021 (CEN) - Powered industrial trucks - Visibility: Test methods and verification - Part 8: Stand-on counterbalance trucks up to and including 10 000 kg capacity - defines test procedures and requirements to evaluate 360° operator visibility for stand‑on counterbalance trucks (no load). It is a machine‑type C standard intended to be used in conjunction with EN 16842-1 and aligned with ISO 5053‑1 classifications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Covers stand‑on counterbalance trucks with rated capacity ≤ 10 000 kg, addressing significant hazards related to operator visibility during intended use and foreseeable misuse.
- Test configuration: Requires a fixed standing index point (STIP) and optional adjusted STIP (ASTIP) to simulate operator movement (ASTIP radii: 125 mm or 200 mm depending on compartment space).
- Lighting equipment and eye‑position simulation: A row of lights is positioned and can be rotated up to ±135° around the STIP to reproduce operator sightlines.
- Fork arm lengths for testing:
- < 1 000 kg: 800 mm
- ≥ 1 000 kg and < 5 000 kg: 1 000 mm
- ≥ 5 000 kg and ≤ 10 000 kg: 1 200 mm (Other fork lengths to be tested if they adversely affect visibility.)
- Test paths and measurement: Defined test paths (P1–P9) laid out around the truck profile with distances and orientations specified in the standard (figures provided) for both forward‑facing and side‑facing operator positions.
- Direct and indirect visibility tests: Procedures for direct line‑of‑sight and mirror/camera based (indirect) visibility follow EN 16842‑1 clauses, with acceptance criteria in Part 8 (direct and indirect).
- Acceptance detail: The document includes minimum illuminated area requirements (e.g. “Each illuminated area shall be at least 10 000 mm and shall have no dimension less than 50 mm” as stated in the standard) and criteria specific to stand‑on counterbalance trucks.
- Reporting & information: Test report content and user information requirements (Clause 8–9).
Practical applications & users
Who uses EN 16842‑8:2021:
- Truck manufacturers - design verification and type testing for visibility compliance.
- Test laboratories - standardized methods for repeatable visibility assessments.
- Safety engineers & compliance teams - risk assessments, CE marking evidence, and procurement specifications.
- Regulators & market surveillance - conformity checks and accident prevention guidance. Practical uses include design optimization (mast/fork layout, operator platform), selecting indirect vision aids (mirrors, cameras), and creating operator instructions and safety labeling.
