Fertilizers - Extraction of water-soluble calcium, magnesium, sodium and sulfur in the form of sulfates

This European Standard specifies a method for the extraction of water-soluble calcium, magnesium, sodium and sulfur (in the form of sulfates), so that the same extract can be used for the determination of each nutrient required.
The method is solely applicable to fertilizers listed in Regulation (EC) 2003/2003, Annex I [2]), for which a declaration of the water-soluble calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sulfur (in the form of sulfates) is provided for in this Regulation.

Overview

EN 15961:2017 (CEN) specifies a standardized extraction method for the determination of water-soluble calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and sulfur (S) in the form of sulfates from fertilizers listed in Regulation (EC) No 2003/2003 (Annex I). The procedure yields a single aqueous extract that can be used for subsequent analyses of each nutrient, improving laboratory efficiency and result comparability across EU member states.

Key practical points from the standard:

  • Extraction by boiling in distilled or demineralized water.
  • Use of a covered beaker to avoid losses during boiling.
  • Cooling and standing period prior to decanting and filtration.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Method applicable only to fertilizers for which declarations of water-soluble Ca, Mg, Na and sulfate-S are required under Regulation (EC) 2003/2003, Annex I.
  • Principle: Nutrients are extracted by boiling the fertilizer sample in water under the specified conditions so one extract can serve multiple determinations.
  • Sample mass rules:
    • If fertilizer contains no S or contains ≤ 3 % S (i.e., ≤ 7.5 % SO3) and ≤ 4 % Ca (i.e., ≤ 5.6 % CaO): use 5 g test portion.
    • If fertilizer contains > 3 % S and > 4 % Ca: use 1 g test portion.
  • Extraction procedure (high level):
    • Add ~400 ml distilled/demin water to the test portion in a 600 ml beaker.
    • Boil for 30 minutes with a lid to minimize losses.
    • Allow to cool and stand for 24 hours at room temperature.
    • Decant into a 500 ml graduated flask, make up to volume, mix and filter.
    • Discard initial filtrate fractions; final filtrate must be transparent and stored stoppered if not analysed immediately.
  • Required equipment: standard laboratory apparatus including electric hot plate, 600 ml beaker, 500 ml graduated flask and dry filter.

Applications

This extraction method is designed for laboratories testing EU-listed fertilizers where declarations of water-soluble Ca, Mg, Na and sulfate-S are required. Benefits and uses include:

  • Enables a single extract for multiple nutrient determinations, reducing sample handling and reagent use.
  • Improves consistency and comparability of results across testing labs and national standards bodies.
  • Supports regulatory compliance with Regulation (EC) No 2003/2003 for fertilizer labelling and composition.

Related Standards

  • EN 1482-1: Fertilizers and liming materials - Sampling and sample preparation - Part 1: Sampling (recommended sampling method).
  • EN 1482-2: Sample preparation for laboratory testing.
  • EN 12944-1 and EN 12944-2: Vocabulary for fertilizers and liming materials (terms and definitions referenced).

Additional notes:

EN 15961:2017 supersedes EN 15961:2011 and was prepared by CEN/TC 260. The revised edition includes technical updates to the solution preparation procedure (clause 8.2) and editorial revisions. Laboratories should report all required test report items specified in the standard, including sample identification, method reference, results, dates, repeatability information and any deviations or incidents.
