Overview

EN 16197:2012 - "Fertilizers - Determination of magnesium by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS)" is a CEN European Standard that specifies a validated laboratory method for measuring magnesium (Mg) in fertilizer extracts using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The method applies to EC fertilizer extracts prepared according to EN 15960 (total extraction) and EN 15961 (water‑soluble extraction) when a declaration of total and/or water‑soluble magnesium is required. Certain high‑magnesium products (e.g., kieserite and magnesium sulfate types) are excluded where an alternative method applies.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Principle: Determination of Mg by AAS at a wavelength of 285.2 nm after appropriate dilution of the extract.
  • Scope & exclusions: Applicable to fertilizer extracts from EN 15960/EN 15961; excludes specific fertilizer types covered by Regulation (EC) No 2003/2003 (method 8.8 / EN 16198).
  • Sample preparation: Sampling is outside the analytical method but sample preparation and grinding are recommended per EN 1482-2.
  • Reagents & standards: Defined reagents include HCl solutions (1.0 mol/L and 0.5 mol/L), a certified magnesium standard solution, and strontium chloride solution added to final solutions to minimize interferences.
  • Apparatus & conditions: AAS instrument with air‑acetylene flame; calibration using at least five standards within the instrument’s working range.
  • Procedure highlights: Dilution steps to bring Mg into the AAS optimum range, preparation of blank and calibration solutions containing 10% (v/v) strontium chloride, triplicate measurements and calibration curve-based quantification.
  • Calculation & reporting: Formulae account for blank correction and dilution factors to express Mg (and MgO) as mass fraction (%) in the fertilizer sample.
  • Precision: Repeatability and reproducibility established through inter‑laboratory tests and evaluated according to ISO 5725-2; relevant r and R values are reported in the standard.

Applications and users

EN 16197:2012 is intended for:

  • Fertilizer manufacturers and QC laboratories performing fertilizer analysis and product declarations.
  • Third‑party testing labs and conformity assessment bodies verifying compliance with EU fertiliser regulations.
  • Research and environmental laboratories needing reliable magnesium content data in fertilizer extracts. Practical uses include quality control, regulatory compliance, specification verification (Mg and MgO content), and troubleshooting analytical interferences in complex fertilizer matrices.

Related standards

  • EN 15960, EN 15961 - extraction methods for total and water‑soluble Ca, Mg, Na and S.
  • EN 1482-1 / EN 1482-2 - sampling and sample preparation.
