Overview
SIST EN 60335-2-103:2003/oprA1:2005 is a European standard developed by CLC that specifies the safety requirements for electric drives used in gates, doors, and windows. This amendment addresses safety concerns for powered drives that move gates, doors, and windows both horizontally and vertically, commonly found in households and similar premises. The standard applies to drives powered by single-phase voltages up to 250 V and other appliances up to 480 V. It is designed to safeguard users by outlining requirements and test methods to prevent accidents and hazards associated with moving parts.
SIST EN 60335-2-103:2003/oprA1:2005 is meant to be used in conjunction with IEC 60335-1:2010, the general standard for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
- Covers safety of electric drives for household gates, doors, and windows.
- Includes horizontally and vertically moving products.
- Applicable to appliances not exceeding 250 V (single-phase) or 480 V (others).
Hazard Mitigation
- Addresses entrapment and pinch hazards involving powered moving parts.
- Specifies the minimum gap distances to avoid entrapment for fingers, feet, head, and body.
- Requires safeguarding devices when minimum distances cannot be achieved.
Manual Release and Emergency Operation
- Outlines requirements for manual release of drives, ensuring they are operable without risk.
- Mandates clear marking and instructions for safe manual operation.
- Includes provisions for emergency exits and routes.
Abnormal Operation and Controls
- Specifies drive behavior in the event of abnormal operation or malfunction.
- Drives must stop safely or transition to a secure state after a maximum of one operation cycle if a fault occurs.
- Details on control options, including single and multi-button systems, to ensure user safety.
Mechanical Safety
- Requires drives to be designed and tested under worst-case, but realistic, conditions.
- Mandates that certain gaps between moving and fixed parts be maintained or appropriately guarded.
Applications
SIST EN 60335-2-103:2003/oprA1:2005 is relevant for manufacturers, installers, and safety professionals involved with:
Residential Automation
- Electric gate openers, automatic window systems, and powered door drives for homes and apartments.
Commercial Buildings
- Automated access points such as sliding doors, rolling shutters for shops, and office entry systems.
Public Access Areas
- Safety requirements for doors and gates used in public buildings, particularly in emergency exit routes.
Repair and Maintenance
- Provides guidance for maintenance teams regarding safe servicing practices and retrofitting requirements to meet current safety standards.
Implementing this standard helps organizations reduce liability, improve user safety, and ensure compliance with European regulatory requirements for automated gate, door, and window drives.
Related Standards
When applying or assessing compliance with SIST EN 60335-2-103:2003/oprA1:2005, the following related standards and documents should also be considered:
- IEC 60335-1:2010 - Safety of household and similar electrical appliances, general requirements
- EN 60335-2-97 - Particular requirements for drives for rolling shutters, awnings, blinds, and similar equipment
- EN ISO 13849 - Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems
- EN 12453 - Industrial, commercial, and garage doors and gates - Safety in use of power operated doors
These standards collectively form a comprehensive framework for the safety and reliability of automated entry systems in both residential and commercial environments.
