SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 62319-1-1:2005, published by SIST and based on IEC 62319-1-1:2005. It is a blank detail specification for polymeric thermistors - directly heated positive step function temperature coefficient - for current limiting application. The document tells manufacturers, specifiers, and test laboratories what a compliant detail specification must contain and how these thermistors are to be inspected.
What does SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 specify?
SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 specifies the style, layout, and minimum content for detail specifications for this thermistor family. In practice, it is the template that a product-specific detail specification has to follow.
The standard also states that detail specifications that do not follow these requirements are not to be treated as IEC-compliant specifications. The document is organized into Clause 1 on general data, Clause 2 on inspection requirements, and Annex ZA on normative references.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005?
SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 requires the detail specification to include the information identified by the numbered placeholders on the first page. That means the issuing organization, document number, generic specification reference, blank detail specification number, thermistor description, construction details, outline drawing, application or assessment level, and reference data for comparison.
Detail specification content
Clause 1 says the detail specification shall state the mounting method, dimensions, coating details, termination details, flammability, solvent resistance, packaging, marking, and ordering information. This matters because the buyer and the test lab need a single document that defines the exact product form, how it is mounted, and how it is identified.
Clause 1.2 requires dimensions to be given with units and to show which dimensions are suitable for gauging. Clause 1.9 requires electrical data and characteristics, including operating temperature range, maximum voltage, zero power resistance (R_t), isolation voltage and insulation resistance for insulated thermistors, trip current, hold current, residual current at U_max, maximum current, time-to-trip, fault current, and power dissipation. For a practical specification, these are the values that define whether the component fits the circuit and the protection function.
Clause 1.10 requires marking to follow the generic specification IEC 62319-1, and Clause 1.11 requires orders to quote the detail specification number and issue reference. That helps procurement and incoming inspection match delivered parts to the approved specification.
Inspection and qualification
Clause 2 separates qualification approval from quality conformance inspection. Qualification approval follows IEC 62319-1, while quality conformance inspection uses the test schedules in Tables 1 and 2 with sampling, periodicity, severity, and acceptance criteria.
Table 1 covers lot-by-lot inspection and includes visual examination, marking, dimensions, zero power resistance, hold current, time-to-trip, solderability, and voltage proof for insulated types. Table 2 covers periodic inspection and includes trip current, residual current, power dissipation, resistance to soldering heat, robustness of terminations, vibration, bump or shock, rapid change of temperature, cycle life, trip endurance, and climatic sequence.
The test notes matter in practice: some tests apply only to solderable or insulated types, vibration/bump/shock are only used if required in the detail specification, and high breaking current devices above 100 A need their cycle life and trip endurance conditions stated in the detail specification. The document also calls for 100 % production testing to be followed by sampling re-inspection to monitor outgoing quality level.
What terms does SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 define?
- Blank detail specification - A supplementary document to the generic specification that sets the format and minimum content for product-specific detail specifications.
- Generic specification - The base specification, IEC 62319-1, that the blank detail specification builds on.
- Assessment level(s) - The quality or classification level to be stated for the thermistor in the detail specification.
- Hold current - The current used in the hold-current test to show the thermistor remains in its normal state under specified conditions.
- Trip current - The current used in the trip-current test to show the thermistor switches as required.
- Time-to-trip - The time allowed for the thermistor to change state under the specified test conditions.
- Zero power resistance (R_t) - The resistance measured under the specified temperature condition before self-heating becomes significant.
Who uses SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005?
SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 is used by thermistor manufacturers, component specifiers, test laboratories, and quality assurance teams. It is also useful for buyers and product engineers who need a current-limiting thermistor defined in a way that supports qualification, conformance testing, and repeatable ordering.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005?
SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 relies on IEC 62319-1, which provides the generic specification for polymeric thermistors. IEC 60068 supplies the environmental test methods used in the inspection schedules, and IEC 60410 provides the sampling plans and procedures for inspection by attributes.
Annex ZA maps these references to the corresponding European publications, including EN 60068 series and EN 62319-1:2005.
What does the SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 document contain?
SIST EN 62319-1-1:2005 contains a first-page template with numbered placeholders for identification data and technical description. It also contains general data requirements for mounting, dimensions, coating, terminations, packaging, electrical ratings, marking, and ordering information.
The document includes two inspection tables that set out lot-by-lot and periodic test schedules. Those tables are used for production control, qualification approval, and conformance testing, and they reference test methods such as visual examination, electrical measurements, solderability, voltage proof, environmental testing, and mechanical endurance.

Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.

accordance with IEC specifications nor shall they so be described.
In the preparation of detail specifications, the content of 4.1 of the generic specification shall
be taken into account.
The numbers between brackets on the first page correspond to the following information
which shall be inserted in the position indicated.
Identification of the detail specification
[1] The “International Electrotechnical Commission” or the National Organisation under
whose authority the detail specification is drafted.
[2] The IEC or National Standards number of the detail specification, date of issue and any
other information required by the national system.
[3] The number and issue number of the IEC or national generic specification.
[4] The IEC number of the blank detail specification.
Identification of the thermistor
[5] A short description of the type of thermistor.
[6] Information on typical construction (if applicable).
NOTE When the thermistor is not designed for use on printed boards, this should be stated in the detail
specification in this position.
[7] Outline drawing with main dimensions which are important for the interchangeability
and/or reference to the national or international documents for outlines. Alternatively, this
drawing may be given in the annex to the detail specification.
[8] Application or group of applications covered and/or assessment level.
[9] Reference data on the most important properties, to allow comparison between the various
thermistor types.
