Overview
SIST EN 6031:2016 is a European Standard developed by CEN under the Aerospace series, focusing on fibre reinforced plastics. This standard specifies a test method for determining the in-plane shear properties of composite materials, specifically using the ± 45° tensile test. It covers the procedure to measure the in-plane shear strength and shear modulus of fiber composite laminates. The test method relies on the uniaxial tensile response of symmetrically laminated ± 45° fibre composites, commonly made from unidirectional tape or woven fabric reinforcements.
This standard is essential for aerospace industry professionals and composite materials engineers who require reliable and standardized testing protocols for fibre reinforced plastics. It does not cover health and safety requirements; users must independently address these aspects.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
SIST EN 6031:2016 applies to composite laminates manufactured from unidirectional tape or woven fabric reinforcement in aerospace applications. It standardizes the test method for in-plane shear properties critical to structural integrity.Test Principle
The method determines shear strength and modulus through the tensile stress-strain behavior of composites laid up with fibres at ± 45° angles symmetrically around a mid-plane. Data from tensile testing are mathematically transformed into shear properties using laminated plate theory.Specimen Preparation
Specimens consist of eight plies arranged ( +45°, -45°, +45°, -45° )s. Thickness variation must be below 2%, with fiber orientation accuracy of ± 2.5°. The preparation includes proper specimen cutting, tab bonding, and strain gauge installation to capture longitudinal and transverse strain data.Testing Apparatus and Instrumentation
Key equipment includes:- Tensile testing machine with 1% accuracy
- Micrometer and vernier caliper for dimension measurement
- Strain gauges or bi-directional extensometers for accurate strain recording
- Thermocouples and vacuum bag sealant for temperature-controlled tests
Test Procedure
The specimen is conditioned under specified temperature and humidity, mounted carefully to avoid bending, and tested at stepwise crosshead speeds (1 mm/min up to 2% strain, then 10 mm/min to failure). Strain data is recorded continuously, and tests can be performed at elevated or sub-zero temperatures under controlled conditions. Results and Calculations
Shear strength is calculated from the maximum tensile load, specimen width, and thickness. The shear modulus is derived from the linear portion of the shear stress-strain curve between defined strain limits, involving precise strain difference measurements.Test Reporting
Comprehensive reporting is mandated, covering material identification, specimen preparation details, test conditions, equipment used, load-deformation curves, calculated values with statistics, and any deviations or incidents during testing.
Applications
SIST EN 6031:2016 provides vital guidance for aerospace manufacturers, quality assurance labs, and material researchers involved in:
- Evaluating the mechanical performance of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) composites
- Designing structural components where accurate knowledge of in-plane shear properties is critical
- Ensuring compliance with aerospace industry standards for composite material qualification
- Supporting product development and failure analysis by providing standardized test data
- Conducting environmental or conditioning effects assessment such as humidity or thermal aging impact on composite shear behavior
This test method, by offering reliable in-plane shear property determination, helps improve material selection, enhances safety margins, and contributes to longevity and performance in aerospace composite applications.
