SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 761-1 for Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) radio links for railways in the 2.45 GHz band. It specifies the technical characteristics and measurement methods for interrogators, called Track Units (TU), and transponders used in railway AVI systems. In practice, it tells manufacturers, test labs, and approval bodies how to verify transmit power, frequency accuracy, spectrum use, receiver performance, spurious emissions, and transponder response.
What does SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 specify?
SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 applies to dedicated Short Range Device (SRD) microwave links for European railway AVI systems operating in the 2,446 GHz to 2,454 GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. It covers fixed installed interrogators and mobile transponders, and it is the part of the series focused on technical characteristics and methods of measurement.
The standard is organized as follows:
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Normative radiated measurement sites and arrangements |
| Annex B | Normative general description of measurement methods |
| Annex C | Normative alternative receiver measurements using messages |
| Annex D | Informative clauses relevant to compliance with the R&TTE Directive |
| Annex E | Informative bibliography |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003?
Equipment and test preparation
SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 requires equipment to be tested across all intended operating frequencies, with the highest declared power setting used for transmitter tests. If a family has several power levels or frequency variants, the manufacturer must declare them and test the combinations that matter most in practice.
The document also sets rules for integral antennas, temporary antenna connectors, and test fixtures. This matters because many railway units do not have a normal 50 Ω RF connector, so the standard explains how labs can still make repeatable measurements without changing the radiating behavior of the equipment.
Mechanical, electrical, and marking provisions
SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 requires good engineering practice, user controls that are not easily maladjusted, and visible durable marking with the manufacturer name or trademark and the type designation. Any regulatory marking must follow CEPT/ERC Recommendation 70-03 or national regulatory rules where applicable.
Transmit shut-off facilities and receiver mute, squelch, or battery-saving circuits must be made inoperative during tests. That prevents the test from being distorted by automatic functions that would otherwise hide real radio performance.
Test conditions and signals
SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 defines normal and extreme test conditions for temperature, humidity, and supply voltage. It also specifies how to use external and internal power sources, including the voltage ranges to apply during testing.
The document defines normal test signals for continuous bit streams and for messages, including D-M0, D-M1, D-M2, D-M2', D-M3, D-M4, and D-M4'. This is important because receiver and transmitter results depend on the exact data pattern being sent.
Transmitter requirements
SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 limits equivalent isotropically radiated power (e.i.r.p.) to 500 mW (+27 dBm). It also sets a frequency error limit of ±20 ppm, a modulation index of at least 0.9, an eyepattern requirement of 90%, a transmitter spectrum mask, radiated spurious emission limits, and duty cycle classes.
In practice, these limits control interference, frequency stability, and channel occupancy. The duty cycle classification is especially relevant for intermittently active railway equipment because it links the declared operating pattern to the radio test plan.
Receiver and transponder requirements
SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 sets receiver tests for maximum usable sensitivity, high-signal behavior, co-channel rejection, adjacent channel selectivity, spurious response rejection, intermodulation response rejection, and receiver spurious emissions. The maximum usable sensitivity limit is -84 dBm.
For transponders, the standard covers sensitivity, wake-up protection against unwanted fields, conversion gain, and spurious radiation. These tests matter because the transponder must answer only when it should, at the right strength, and without creating unwanted emissions.
What terms does SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 define?
- Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) - The railway identification system using a transmitter/receiver combination and transponders to identify objects.
- Track Unit (TU) - The fixed interrogator installed at the trackside.
- Transponder - A device normally fixed in a vehicle that responds to an interrogating signal.
- Equivalent isotropically radiated power (e.i.r.p.) - The peak transmitter power expressed as radiated power in the standard’s measurement context.
- Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) - The transmit modulation used by the interrogator.
- Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) - The receive modulation used by the interrogator.
- Duty cycle - The ratio of total message on-time to off-time within one hour.
- Maximum usable sensitivity - The minimum wanted signal level that still produces the required receiver performance.
Who uses SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003?
Railway equipment manufacturers use SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 to design interrogators and transponders that can be tested consistently. Test laboratories use it to set up antenna, power, and signal arrangements for type testing and conformity work.
Quality managers, buyers, and approval teams use it to check whether a product is the right railway AVI standard for 2.45 GHz systems. It is also relevant for organizations handling regulatory assessment against the R&TTE framework and related national requirements.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003?
SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 cites CEPT/ERC Recommendation 70-03 for SRD use, CISPR 16-1 for measuring apparatus, ITU-T Recommendation O.153 for pseudo-random bit sequence measurements, ETSI ETR 028 for measurement uncertainty, IEC 60721-3-4 for environmental categories, and ITU-T Recommendation O.41 for psophometric weighting.
The foreword also identifies Part 2 of the same EN as the companion harmonized standard covering essential requirements under article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive.
What does the SIST EN 300 761-1 V1.2.1:2003 document contain?
The document gives detailed measurement arrangements, including conducted and radiated setups, artificial antennas, test fixtures, substitution antenna methods, and test site layouts. It includes formulas and procedures for transponder sensitivity and conversion gain, plus tables for frequency ranges, limits, and uncertainty values.
It also provides receiver test methods based on continuous bit streams or messages, which helps when a system is easier to verify through coded messages than through raw data patterns. Annex A adds outdoor and anechoic chamber arrangements, while Annex C gives an alternative message-based receiver method for special cases and installed systems.
