Personal eye-protection - Automatic welding filters
This European standard specifies requirements for automatic welding filters which switch their luminous transmittance to a lower predetermined value when a welding arc is ignited (referred to as welding filters with switchable scale numbers). It also specifies requirements for automatic welding filters which switch their luminous transmittance to a lower value, where the lower value of luminous transmittance is set automatically in dependence on the illuminance generated by the welding arc (referred to as welding filters with automatic scale number setting).
The requirements of this standard apply if such a filter is to be used for continuous viewing of the welding process, (including gas welding and cutting), and if it is to be used only during the period when the arc is being ignited.
These filters are used in welders' eye protectors or are fixed to equipment.
If they are to be used in welders' eye protectors, other applicable requirements for these types of filters are given in EN 166. The requirements for the frames/mountings to which they are intended to be fitted are given in EN 175.
Guidance on the selection and use of these filters is given in annex A.
The specifications for welding filters without switchable luminous transmittance are given in EN 169.
The specifications for welding filters without switchable luminous transmittance are given in prEN 169:2001.

1 Scope
This European standard specifies requirements for automatic welding filters which switch their luminous
transmittance to a lower predetermined value when a welding arc is ignited (referred to as welding filters with
switchable scale numbers). It also specifies requirements for automatic welding filters which switch their luminous
transmittance to a lower value, where the lower value of luminous transmittance is set automatically in dependence
on the illuminance generated by the welding arc (referred to as welding filters with automatic scale number setting).
The requirements of this standard apply if such a filter is to be used for continuous viewing of the welding process,
(including gas welding and cutting), and if it is to be used only during the period when the arc is being ignited.
These filters are used in welders' eye protectors or are fixed to equipment.
If they are to be used in welders’ eye protectors, other applicable requirements for these types of filters are given in
EN 166. The requirements for the frames/mountings to which they are intended to be fitted are given in EN 175.
Guidance on the selection and use of these filters is given in annex A.
The specifications for welding filters without switchable luminous transmittance are given in EN 169.

higher value (dark state scale number) selected by the user when the welding arc is ignited.
3.1.2
automatic welding filter with automatic scale number setting

3.3
dark state scale number
the scale number corresponding to the value of the luminous transmittance t reached after the ignition of the
d
welding arc by an automatic welding filter (see Figure 1)
3.4
darkest state scale number
the highest scale number corresponding to the minimum value of luminous transmittance t of an automatic
2
welding filter claimed by the manufacturer (see Figure 1)
3.5
switching time
the switching time t of an automatic welding filter is defined by the following integral:
s
t=t (t(t)=3t)
1 2
ttt t
= ( )d
s
∫
t=0
t
1
where
t = 0 is the time at which the arc ignites;
t (t) is luminous transmittance at a time t after the ignition of the welding arc;
t = t (t (t)=3·t) is the time at which the luminous transmittance falls to 3 times the luminous transmittance in
2
the darkest state.
NOTE In the case of short term exposure to light, the glare is approximately proportional to the product of the illuminance
at the eye and time. The time relationship of the darkening process can be very different depending on the construction of the
welding filter with switchable scale number. It is therefore appropriate to define the switching time as an integral of the luminous
transmittance over time and not merely by the initial and final luminous transmittances.

4.3.7 Angle dependence of luminous transmittance (Optional requirement)
The luminous transmittance is measured at normal to the filter and at angles of incidence up to ±15° to the normal
in order to establish the maximum and minimum transmittance. Then the ratios of the luminous transmittance
values measured at any angle of incidence up to ±15° to the normal to the filter and the value of the luminous
transmittance measured at normal incidence are calculated as well as the reciprocals of these ratios. The
maximum of these ratios and their reciprocals as compared with the values in Table 6 determines the class of
angle dependence of luminous transmittance.

4.4 Spectral sensitivity of welding filters with automatic scale number setting
The maximum spectral sensitivity of welding filters with automatic scale number setting shall occur at a wavelength
of (555 – 75) nm and the full bandwidth at half maximum of the spectral sensitivity curve shall be between 50 nm
and 200 nm.
NOTE The spectral sensitivity should follow the eye sensitivity curve V(l) as closely as possible.

5.2.1.2 High speed optical shutter
A device capable of switching on the switching light source at a speed meeting the requirements of 5.2.2.
5.2.1.3 Light source for the measurement of luminous transmittance
A source of standard illuminant A (see ISO/CIE 10526).
5.2.1.4 Light detector and recording apparatus
A device capable of detecting and recording the light from the measurement light source transmitted by the welding
filter.
5.2.2 Performance of test equipment
Check that when the light beam is switched by the high speed shutter, the rise time between 10% and 90% of the
light transmitted by the shutter is no greater than 10% of the switching time required for the scale number
difference to be measured. See Table 4.
5.2.3 Measurement
Maintain the test specimen at the appropriate test temperature for a minimum of 2 h before testing and during the
period of the test.
Set up the measurement light source (5.2.1.3) and the test specimen so that the plane of the test specimen is at
o
(90 ± 5) to the measurement beam.
With the switching light source on, switch the high-speed shutter to allow the light through to the test specimen,
thereby switching the test specimen to its darkest state. Record the measurement light transmitted through the test
specimen during the switching period.
5.2.4 Calculation
Calculate the switching time t from the equation given in 3.5, with t = 0 as the time when the illuminance at the test
s
specimen reaches a level between 40 and 60% of the value given in 5.2.1.1.
5.3 Scale number setting of welding filters with automatic scale number setting
5.3.1 Test equipment
High-pressure xenon lamp as source of radiation producing a variable illuminance.
5.3.2 Measurement of the scale number setting
a) Set up the light source of 5.3.1 and the test specimen so that the plane of the sensor field of the test specimen
is at (90 – 10)° to the light beam including the divergence of the beam.
b) Determine the luminous transmittance at the illuminance applicable for the scale numbers according to the
formula given in 4.3.2.5 (a) respectively in Table 2 within the range specified by the manufacturer. The
tolerance of the illuminance values shall be ± 10 %. Perform the measurements at (-5 ± 2)°C and at (55 ± 2)°C
and check if the requirement of 4.3.2.5 (b) is met.

d) At double the illuminance value applicable for the darkest state scale number, check that the luminous
transmittance of the filter corresponds to the range of the darkest state scale number. Perform the
measurements at (23 ± 5)°C and check if the requirements of 4.3.2.5 (c) and (e) are met.
Note In the preceding section “darkest state scale number” means the highest scale number specified by the
manufacturer.
5.4 Spectral sensitivity of welding filters with automatic scale number setting
5.4.1 General
Two methods are described in this section. Alternatively, any equivalent method may be used. Measurements shall
be carried out at (23 ± 5)°C.
Set up the light source for the scale number setting and the test specimen so that the plane of the sensor field is
irradiated by the light beam with an illuminance in the range of the automatic scale number setting.
5.4.2 Method using monochromatic radiation
a) Irradiate the sensor(s) for the automatic scale number setting with radiation in the wavelength range between
400 nm and 900 nm having a spectral bandwidth not greater than 50 nm and determine the irradiance at the
sensor (SI unit: W/m²);
b) Reduce this irradiance until the lowest scale number of the dark scale number range of the filter is just set;
c) The reciprocal of these irradiance values, as determined in 5.3.2 (c), gives the spectral sensitivity curve in
dependence on the wavelength.
5.4.3 Method using cut-off filters
a) Irradiate the sensor(s) for the automatic scale number setting with radiation from the radiation source described
in 5.3.1 and determine the irra
