Overview
EN 60404-4:1997/A1:2002 is the CENELEC amendment A1 to the European standard for methods of measurement of d.c. magnetic properties of magnetically soft materials (adopting IEC 60404-4:1995/A1:2000). The amendment updates terminology (replacing “iron and steel” with magnetically soft materials), clarifies specimen types, and adds requirements for the widely used ring method of d.c. magnetic measurement. It was prepared by IEC TC 68 and approved by CENELEC in 2001–2002.
Key Topics
- Scope update: The title and scope language were revised to refer to magnetically soft materials rather than only iron and steel, broadening applicability.
- Ring method applicability: The amendment explicitly states the ring method is suitable for laminated, solid, and sintered ring specimens.
- Specimen dimension rule for sintered materials: For sintered magnetically soft materials, where finished dimensions are usually small, the amendment introduces the dimensional relationship:
- D ≤ 1,4 d
- The document notes that for such specimens there will be a greater radial variation in magnetic field strength.
- Standardization and governance: Prepared by IEC TC 68 (Magnetic alloys and steels); the amendment followed CENELEC adoption procedures with national implementation deadlines.
Practical Applications
- Quality assurance and testing laboratories measuring d.c. magnetic behavior of soft magnetic materials.
- Manufacturers of magnetic components (cores, rings, sintered parts) who need standardized test methods for acceptance and comparison.
- Design and R&D teams working with laminated, solid or sintered soft magnetic materials who require consistent measurement procedures and specimen design guidance.
- Regulatory and standards bodies harmonizing national test standards with European and IEC documents.
Who Uses This Standard
- Material test labs and certification bodies
- Magnetic materials and component manufacturers
- Electrical/mechanical engineers specializing in magnetic component design
- National standards committees implementing CENELEC/IEC norms
