Overview
EN 60603-14:1999 (aligned with IEC 60603-14:1998) defines a detail specification for circular connectors for low‑frequency audio and video applications used with printed boards. The standard covers connectors intended for frequencies below 3 MHz and specifies dimensions, gauges, electrical and mechanical requirements, and a comprehensive test schedule to ensure reliable performance in audio, video and audio‑visual equipment.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Circular PCB-mounted connectors for low‑frequency audio/video equipment.
- Dimensions & gauges: Key reference dimensions are given for free (plug) and fixed (jack) connectors (e.g., reference inner spring contact diameter A = 8.2 mm for guidance). Hardened tool‑steel gauges with specified surface roughness (ISO 468) are defined for verification.
- Electrical characteristics:
- Voltage proof (mated):500 V r.m.s.
- Initial contact resistance:≤ 30 mΩ (millivolt level method)
- Initial insulation resistance:≥ 100 MΩ at 500 V ± 50 V d.c.
- Mechanical characteristics:
- Insertion force (total): ≤ 30 N
- Withdrawal force (total):3–30 N
- Individual withdrawal: pin ≥ 0.8 N, shell ≥ 3 N
- Mechanical endurance:500 operations (typically split across test phases)
- Climatic category:10/070/04 (–10 °C to +70 °C; damp heat tests)
- Test program: Structured test groups (P, AP, BP, CP) covering preliminary checks, dynamic/climatic sequencing, mechanical endurance and moisture. A complete sequence requires 20 specimens and prescribes measuring points and order of tests.
Applications
EN 60603-14 is intended for:
- Audio, video and audio‑visual equipment manufacturers specifying interface connectors on printed circuit boards.
- Connector and PCB designers needing standard dimensions and mechanical/electrical performance criteria.
- Test laboratories and quality teams performing type or production verification (contact resistance, insulation, voltage proof, climatic and endurance tests).
- Procurement and compliance teams requiring harmonized product specifications for interoperability and reliability.
Who uses this standard
- Connector designers and mechanical engineers
- PCB layout engineers and product designers in AV industries
- Test engineers and certification labs
- Purchasing and compliance professionals specifying connector requirements
Related standards
- IEC 60512 series (basic test procedures for electromechanical components)
- ISO 468 (surface roughness parameters)
- IEC 60603 (other parts addressing different connector families and detail specifications)
EN 60603-14:1999 is a practical reference for ensuring circular low‑frequency audio/video connectors meet reproducible dimensional, electrical and mechanical performance criteria for reliable operation in printed‑board applications.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 60603-14 has been prepared by subcommittee 48B: Connectors, of
IEC technical committee 48: Electromechanical components and mechanical structures for
