SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60512-14-4:2006, published by SIST. It specifies a standard immersion test for connectors for electronic equipment to check whether their sealing prevents water ingress under defined pressure and time conditions. It is intended for engineers, test laboratories, quality managers, and specifiers who need to qualify or verify waterproof sealing for connectors and similar devices.
What does SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 specify?
SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 specifies a sealing test method for connectors within the scope of IEC technical committee 48, and it may also be used for similar devices when a detail specification calls it up. The document is organized into scope and object, normative references, preparations, method, and the details that the product specification must state. It also includes Annex ZA for the European handling of the referenced IEC publications.

| ZA | Normative references to IEC 60512-1-1 and IEC 60512-3-1, with the corresponding European publications |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006?
SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 sets out a controlled immersion test that combines pressure, time, and post-test inspection. In practice, the test checks whether a mated connector pair keeps water out well enough to preserve insulation performance after being submerged under pressure.
Specimen preparation and setup
The specimen shall be a mated pair of connectors with terminations wired as stated in the detail specification. All wires and cables shall either be sealed or extended outside the test chamber. This matters because the test is for the connector sealing itself, not leakage through the cable route.
The test medium is a 5 % ± 1 % by weight solution of non-iodized salt in distilled or deionised water, prepared without contaminants that would affect wetting. The vessel shall be in a chamber that can be pressurized to at least 105 kPa differential. That ensures the test environment is strong enough to apply the required load.
If the detail specification requires it, the specified sealant and/or lubricant shall be applied in the manner stated there. Mounting of the specimen is also taken from the detail specification when relevant. This means product-specific documentation controls how the connector is assembled for the test.
Test conditions and measurements
The test shall be carried out at room temperature, with the specimen and solution temperatures within 5 °C of each other. The specimen shall be fully submerged, with its highest point at least 25 mm below the surface. These conditions keep the immersion exposure consistent from one test to another.
The chamber shall be pressurized to 100 ± 5 kPa differential for 4 h, then returned to atmospheric pressure within 5 min to 15 min. While the specimen remains submerged, insulation resistance shall then be measured in accordance with IEC 60512-3-1. This is the main performance check after immersion.
Inspection and acceptance-related details
Before the test, a visual examination shall be carried out in accordance with IEC 60512-1-1, and there shall be no defects that would impair the validity of the test. After the test, a visual examination shall again be carried out, this time with 10× magnification, and any defects that would impair normal function shall be documented. In practice, the standard links electrical verification with a documented visual check of the connector condition.
What the detail specification must state
The detail specification shall give:
- number of specimens
- preconditioning, if required
- wiring of the specimen, including wire/cable size and type
- sealant and/or lubricant to be applied, means and quantity, or the statement that none is required
- minimum insulation resistance after the test
- any deviation from the standard method
What terms does SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 define?
detail specification - The product-specific document that calls up the test and sets the wiring, mounting, materials, and acceptance details.
specimen - The test item, which here is a mated pair of connectors with its terminations.
differential pressure - The pressure above atmospheric pressure used to load the chamber during immersion.
insulation resistance - The electrical resistance measured after the test to check whether water ingress has reduced isolation.
visual examination - The inspection performed before and after the test, including the final 10× magnified check.
sealant and/or lubricant - The specified material that may be applied to the specimen when the detail specification requires it.
Who uses SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006?
SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 is used by connector manufacturers, test laboratories, and quality assurance teams when verifying sealing against water ingress. It is also used by product specifiers and buyers who write or review detail specifications for connectors for electronic equipment and similar devices. In practice, it supports design verification, qualification testing, and documentation of waterproof performance.
What changed in SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 cancels and replaces Test 14d of IEC 60512-7, issued in 1993. The document states that it is a technical revision.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006?
SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 is read with EN 60512-1 and EN 60512-1-100, which explain the structure of the EN 60512 series. Its normative references are IEC 60512-1-1 for visual examination and IEC 60512-3-1 for insulation resistance measurement. Annex ZA gives the corresponding European publications for those references.
What does the SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 document contain?
SIST EN 60512-14-4:2006 contains the full immersion test method, including specimen preparation, the salt-water test medium, pressure and time conditions, and the sequence of measurements. It also contains the initial and final visual examinations and the insulation resistance measurement after the chamber returns to atmospheric pressure. The document finishes by listing the items that a detail specification must state for a particular connector application.

in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
