Overview
SIST EN IEC 60335-2-24:2023/A11:2023 is a European standard developed by CLC that specifies safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, focusing on refrigerating appliances, ice-cream appliances, and ice makers. This amendment A11 updates the safety protocols to ensure user protection, particularly addressing the risks involved with domestic refrigerators, freezers, ice makers used in food storage, and appliances intended for leisure uses such as in caravans and boats.
The standard is harmonized with the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, offering manufacturers and users a trusted benchmark for appliance safety. It also aligns with multiple international and European standards relating to electrical safety, environmental testing, and hygienic design.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
Applies to refrigerating appliances for household and similar use, including those in leisure vehicles and ice makers within frozen compartments. Focuses on reasonably foreseeable hazards but excludes unsupervised use by very young children.Safety Requirements
Covers construction details to prevent electrical, mechanical, and hygienic hazards:- Appliances must have accessible switches to stop all functions (especially ice-cream appliances and ice makers).
- Drawers with sliding devices require stops to prevent accidental falls.
- Lubricants must be prevented from contaminating food compartments.
- All food-contact surfaces must be durable, cleanable, and resistant to cracking or abrasion.
- Internal water dispensing systems must be accessible for cleaning or designed for manual flushing.
Marking and Instructions
Clear user instructions are mandated, including guidance on:- Safe food storage zones within the appliance according to temperature distribution.
- Proper maintenance such as regular cleaning and defrosting.
- Avoiding temperature rise due to prolonged door opening.
- Safe storage methods for raw meat and fish to prevent contamination.
- Restrictions on freezing fresh food in compartments classified as one-, two-, or three-star.
Updated Definitions
Includes specific terms for refrigerating appliances and compartments classified by temperature ratings (one-star to three-star) derived from EN 62552-1:2020.Compliance and Inspection
The standard introduces inspection-based compliance checks for construction features, hygiene, and operational safety.
Applications
This standard is essential for manufacturers, designers, and safety assessors involved in the development and certification of:
- Household refrigerators and freezers
- Ice-cream makers and ice cube machines intended for home use
- Refrigerating units used in leisure environments like caravans and boats
- Appliances with integrated water dispensing or food-contact features requiring hygiene controls
By adhering to SIST EN IEC 60335-2-24:2023/A11:2023, producers ensure appliances meet rigorous European safety expectations and regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of electrical hazards, contamination, and accidents.
Related Standards
EN IEC 60335-2-24:2022/A11 supplements and modifies several critical standards, including:
- EN 60335-1 - General safety requirements for household electrical appliances
- EN IEC 60335-2-34 - Safety requirements for motor-compressors, integral to refrigeration technology
- EN 62552 - Performance and test methods for domestic refrigerating appliances
- EN ISO 7010 - Safety colors and graphical safety signs
- ISO 5149 - Safety and environmental requirements for refrigerating systems
- EN 1672-2 - Hygiene requirements for food processing machinery
Additionally, it references standards like IEC 60079 series for explosive atmospheres and IEC 60252-1 regarding motor capacitors, emphasizing robust safety across electrical and environmental factors.
This standard provides a comprehensive framework ensuring the safe design, manufacture, and use of household refrigeration and ice-making appliances, supporting manufacturers in meeting EU directives and facilitating consumer safety.
