Abstract

This document relates to EN 50288 1, Multi-element metallic cables used in analogue and digital communication and control.
It covers overall screened work area cables, characterized up to 2GHz, backward compatible to cables specified up to 500MHz, used in work area wiring for information technology, generic-cabling systems.
The electrical, mechanical, transmission and environmental performance characteristics of the cables, related to their reference test methods, are detailed.
This sectional specification is expected to be read in conjunction with EN 50288 1, which contains the essential provisions for its application.
The cables covered by this sectional specification are intended to operate with voltages and currents normally encountered in communication systems. These cables are not intended to be used in conjunction with low impedance sources, for example, the electric power supplies of public utility mains.

kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026 is the SIST publication of the draft European Standard for multi-element metallic cables used in analogue and digital communication and control. It specifies outer screened work area cables characterised from 1 MHz up to 2000 MHz for information technology and generic-cabling systems. The document gives the construction rules, test methods and performance limits that manufacturers, test laboratories and buyers use to check whether a cable fits this application.

What does kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026 specifies screened work area cables for use in work area wiring for information technology and generic-cabling systems. It is intended to be read with EN 50288-1, which provides the essential general provisions for the cable family.

The standard also states that the cables are for the voltages and currents normally encountered in communication systems, not for low-impedance sources such as public utility mains. That matters in practice because it limits the document to communications cabling and not power wiring.

The document is organised into:

  • Clause 1 - scope
  • Clause 2 - normative references
  • Clause 3 - definitions, symbols and abbreviations
  • Clause 4 - cable construction
  • Clause 5 - test methods and requirements for completed cables
  • Annex A - ratings for data cable current, voltage and power
AnnexWhat it covers
Annex A (normative)Table for data cable current, voltage and power ratings

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026?

The core requirements are in Clause 4 and Clause 5. They define how the cable is built and what it must achieve when tested.

Cable construction

Clause 4 requires the conductor to be solid copper or stranded, plain or metal coated, with a nominal diameter between 0.50 mm and 0.80 mm. The cable element is a pair, the sheath and insulation use suitable materials from the EN 50290-2 series, and identification follows IEC 60189-2 or IEC 60708 as appropriate.

Clause 4 also requires screening where applicable, and the cable core screening must meet specified braid coverage levels. In practice, this is what keeps the cable within its intended transmission performance and mechanical protection level.

Electrical performance

Clause 5.2.1 and Table 1 set the low-frequency and d.c. limits, including conductor loop resistance, resistance unbalance, dielectric strength, insulation resistance and capacitance unbalance to earth. These checks show whether the cable can carry signals consistently without excessive loss or imbalance.

Clause 5.2.2 and Table 2 set the high-frequency performance up to 2 GHz, including propagation delay, skew, attenuation, NEXT, PSNEXT, ACR-F, PSACR-F, exogenous crosstalk, transfer impedance, characteristic impedance and return loss. For users, this means the cable is evaluated as a communications channel, not just as a physical assembly.

Table 2 also uses frequency-dependent formulas and notes that some values are for information only, while attenuation must be adjusted for temperature above 20 °C. That matters when comparing test results from different laboratories or from field samples.

Mechanical and environmental performance

Clause 5.3 and Table 3 cover mechanical tests such as conductor elongation, insulation shrinkage, crush resistance, impact resistance, sheath marking abrasion, simulated installation bends and tensile performance. These tests show whether the cable can survive handling, pulling and installation without losing its transmission limits.

Clause 5.4 and Table 4 cover cold bend performance and temperature cycling. In practice, this checks that the cable remains intact and within attenuation limits after exposure to low temperature and repeated thermal changes.

Ratings and application limits

Annex A gives the ratings for data cable current, voltage and power. It is intended for communications technology, including power over data cable applications, and it states that the table shall not be used on or near mains supplies.

What terms does kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026 define?

  • ex - exogenous, meaning derived from or originating externally.
  • NEXT - near-end crosstalk, the interference measured at the transmitting end of a cable pair.
  • PSNEXT - power sum near-end crosstalk, the combined near-end crosstalk from multiple pairs.
  • ACR-F - attenuation to crosstalk ratio at the far end, a measure of signal margin at the receiving end.
  • PSACR-F - power sum attenuation to crosstalk ratio at the far end, the combined far-end margin figure.
  • characteristic impedance - the cable impedance used to assess matching, specified in Table 2 as a mean value at 100 MHz.

Who uses kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026?

Cable manufacturers use kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026 to design screened work area cables and define production checks. Test laboratories use it to run the electrical, mechanical and environmental methods named in the standard.

System designers, installers and quality managers use it when selecting cabling for information technology and generic-cabling systems. Buyers use it to compare products on the same technical basis and to check whether a cable is suitable for a communication system rather than a power circuit.

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026?

  • EN 50288-1:2013 - gives the generic specification and essential provisions for this cable family.
  • EN 50289-3-2, -3-4, -3-5, -3-6, -3-8, -3-9:2001, -3-16 - provide the mechanical test methods used in Clause 5.3.
  • EN 50289-4-6 - provides the temperature cycling method used in Table 4.
  • EN 50290-2 series - provides the material requirements for insulation and sheath.
  • EN 50290-2-1 - defines coverage for screening calculations.
  • IEC 60189-2 and IEC 60708 - provide colour coding for cabling element identification.

What does the kSIST FprEN 50288-13-2:2026 document contain?

The document contains tables for low-frequency and d.c. electrical measurements, high-frequency transmission measurements, mechanical tests, environmental tests and fire performance test methods. It also contains frequency-dependent limit formulas and test notes that tell the reader when a value is for information only or when a test can be omitted under stated conditions.

Annex A contains a rating table for data cable current, voltage and power, with limits for service voltage, current density, short-circuit current density and maximum service temperature. Together, these contents support design verification, type testing and conformity assessment for outer screened work area cables.
