Transport packaging - Reusable, rigid plastics distribution boxes - Part 1: General purpose application

This standard specifies the four main types of reusable rigid plastics distribution boxes for application in the fields of handling, transport, storage and display of food and non-food products in distribution systems from the point of manufacture to the point of retail services:  These are:  a) rigid parallelepipedic and rectangular boxes (stackable boxes) b) foldable boxes c) nestable boxes  d) nestable and stackable boxes. These boxes are based on the modular area 600 mm x 400 mm and subdivisions or multiples of it.

Overview

EN 13117-1:2000 (CEN) covers reusable, rigid plastics distribution boxes for general-purpose use in handling, transport, storage and retail display. The standard defines the four main box types used across distribution systems - stackable (parallelepipedic/rectangular), foldable, nestable, and nestable-and-stackable boxes - and bases their geometry on a common modular area of 600 mm × 400 mm and its subdivisions or multiples. This CEN transport packaging standard targets consistent, interoperable packaging for food and non-food supply chains.

Key topics and technical scope

The standard addresses the following core topics and requirements:

  • Box types and geometry: Identification and classification of the four main reusable rigid plastics box types and their relation to the 600 × 400 mm modular grid.
  • Materials and construction: Use of rigid plastics suitable for repeated handling and cleaning in distribution environments (standard identifies material class but does not specify proprietary formulations).
  • Functional characteristics: Design features that enable stacking, nesting, foldability, and combined nest/stack behaviour for space-efficient transport and storage.
  • Use cases: Intended application across handling, transport, storage and retail display from manufacturer to point-of-sale.
  • Compatibility: Emphasis on modular sizing to ensure interoperability with pallets, shelving and automated distribution equipment.
  • Marking and identification: Requirements for clear, durable identification to support reuse, traceability and logistical handling.

Note: The standard defines form and intended functional requirements rather than prescribing specific proprietary manufacturing details or capacity values.

Practical applications

EN 13117-1 is practical for:

  • Manufacturers of reusable plastic crates and distribution boxes designing products to fit European distribution systems.
  • Logistics and supply chain managers specifying packaging that ensures compatibility and ease of handling across multiple partners.
  • Retailers and food distributors seeking hygienic, reusable packaging for storage and display.
  • Procurement and sustainability teams evaluating reusable transport packaging to reduce single-use waste and lifecycle costs.
  • Packaging designers and engineers implementing modular 600 × 400 mm solutions for automated handling and storage.

Related standards

EN 13117-1 fits within the wider body of CEN transport packaging guidance and should be considered alongside other EN standards covering packaging safety, hygiene, materials and testing. Users often reference multiple EN packaging standards to ensure full compliance for food contact, transport performance and environmental considerations.
