Industrial-process control systems - Classification of adaptive controllers for the purpose of evaluation
Classifies and defines the terms to be used in describing the different types of adaptive controller. The classifications described are logically a complete series, although it is quite possible that no controller will be available in some of the categories described. However, many controllers will be classified under more than one category described in this standard.

Overview
EN 61297:1995 (identical to IEC 61297:1995) provides a clear classification of adaptive controllers for the purpose of evaluation in industrial-process control systems. The standard defines terminology and a logical taxonomy that helps engineers, evaluators and procurement specialists describe and compare adaptive control designs. It separates adaptive controllers into two main types - self-adaptive and fixed dependency adaptation - and specifies terms used to describe adaptation mechanisms, controller structure, signals and adaptation methods.
Key Topics
- Two principal categories
- Self-adaptive controllers: controllers that adjust their control characteristics automatically (either on demand or continuously) to achieve a specified response.
- Fixed dependency adaptation: controllers updated according to prescribed changes based on measured process characteristics (a process model drives the adaptation).
- Types of self-adaptive implementations
- Self-tuning on demand - parameters adjusted when requested by an operator.
- Continuously self-tuning - parameters adjusted continually during operation.
- Structure adaptive - adaptation modifies controller structure (e.g., P↔PI switching).
- Signal adaptive - adaptation modifies input signal characteristics (e.g., input filtering).
- Fixed-dependency variants
- Parameter scheduling - preset parameter changes depending on measured process variables.
- Structure scheduling - switching controller structure by predefined rules.
- Signal scheduling - changing input signal processing as a function of process state.
- Adaptation method descriptors
- Direct vs. indirect adaptation (whether a process model is explicitly generated).
- Deterministic vs. stochastic quality criteria for adaptation.
- Controller algorithm context
- The naming convention includes the underlying control algorithm (e.g., PID, state-space), plus adaptation method and scheduling/self-tuning classification.
Applications
EN 61297:1995 is practical for:
- Control engineers and system integrators specifying or designing adaptive control solutions.
- Test and evaluation teams comparing controllers consistently for performance and suitability.
- Procurement and compliance staff creating evaluation criteria and tender documents.
- Manufacturers and vendors documenting controller capabilities unambiguously.
- Academia and training for teaching adaptive control taxonomy and evaluation practices.
Use cases include selecting adaptive controllers for continuous processes, documenting adaptive behavior in technical specifications, and creating interoperable test reports.
Related Standards
- IEC/EN naming and harmonization practice: this standard complements other industrial-process control standards (e.g., standards for PID controllers, control system safety and measurement/telemetry domains). Refer to IEC technical committee publications on process measurement and control for adjacent requirements.
Keywords: EN 61297:1995, IEC 61297, adaptive controllers, industrial-process control, classification, self-adaptive, fixed dependency adaptation, self-tuning, scheduling, controller evaluation.

INDUSTRIAL-PROCESS CONTROL SYSTEMS -
CLASSIFICATION OF ADAPTIVE CONTROLLERS FOR
THE PURPOSE OF EVALUATION
FOREWORD
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
1)
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on

which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical

reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International

Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
International Standard IEC 1297 has been prepared by sub-committee 65S: Devices, of
IEC technical committee 65: Industrial-process measurement and control.
