Overview
EN ISO 25197:2020/A1:2022 (Small craft - Electrical/electronic control systems for steering, shift and throttle - Amendment 1) is a CEN-adopted amendment to ISO 25197:2020. It updates normative references, clarifies terminology and user-interface requirements, and adds specific provisions for dynamic positioning systems (DPS) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. The standard applies to the design, construction and testing of electrical/electronic steering, shift and throttle systems and dynamic positioning control systems on small craft with hull length up to 24 m. It does not cover electric trolling motors or autopilot systems on sailing craft.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Covers electrical/electronic steering, shift, throttle and DPS for small craft up to 24 m; excludes trolling motors and sailing-autopilots.
- Updated normative references: Replaces older references with recent editions such as ISO 8848:2022 (remote mechanical steering), ISO 10592:2022 (remote hydraulic steering) and ISO 13297:2020 (+ Amd 1:2022) for AC/DC installations, and updates EMC test standards to IEC 61000-4-3:2020 and IEC 61000-4-11:2020.
- Terminology: Introduces the term main steering position (as defined by the manufacturer) to standardize human-machine interface expectations.
- Human-machine interface and indicators:
- Each helm station must provide a visual indication when the control system is active.
- DPS must display a visual DPS precision value at the craft’s main steering position; the manufacturer must designate and document this position in the owner’s manual.
- Documentation: Owner’s manual requirements clarified - must include locations of helm stations and the main steering position. Note references to ISO 10240 for owner’s manual content and ISO 11591 for field of vision from the steering position.
- EMC and testing: Updates reference test methods and immunity requirements to current IEC editions for radiated RF immunity and voltage dip/variation testing.
Applications and who uses it
- Boat and system manufacturers: For compliant design and production of electrical/electronic steering, shift, throttle and DPS systems on small craft.
- Marine system integrators and installers: To ensure correct placement of displays, helm indicators and wiring per updated AC/DC installation references.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors: For EMC and functional testing against the updated IEC and ISO test methods.
- Naval architects and boat builders: To integrate steering systems and document the main steering position in the owner’s manual.
- Regulators and certification bodies: For demonstrating presumption of conformity with EU Directive 2013/53/EU where applicable (see Annex ZA).
