SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 is the Slovenian adoption of CEN amendment A1 to EN 1999-1-1:2007, Eurocode 9 for the general structural rules of aluminium structures. It is used with EN 1990, EN 1991 and the EN 1090 series to design aluminium buildings and civil engineering works for resistance, serviceability, durability and fire resistance. The amendment updates material data, buckling rules, joint design and reliability guidance in the base standard.
What does SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 specify?
SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 specifies design rules for aluminium structures in buildings, civil engineering works and other structural works. It covers resistance, serviceability, durability and fire resistance, and it keeps other building-performance topics such as thermal or sound insulation outside its scope.
The document is part of Eurocode 9 and fits into the wider five-part series:
- EN 1999-1-1 - General structural rules
- EN 1999-1-2 - Structural fire design
- EN 1999-1-3 - Structures susceptible to fatigue
- EN 1999-1-4 - Cold-formed structural sheeting
- EN 1999-1-5 - Shell structures
This amendment updates the base part EN 1999-1-1:2007 across clauses on references, materials, analysis, member resistance, connections, welds and the informative annexes, especially Annex A on reliability differentiation.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009?
SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 does not rewrite Eurocode 9 from scratch. It mainly refines the design data and calculation rules that engineers use when sizing aluminium members and joints.
Material data and design values
Clause 3.2.2 updates Table 3.2b with additional alloy data, including EN-AW 5454 and EN-AW 5754, and it adjusts several product and temper references. That matters because the table is where the designer looks up strength values, heat-affected zone data and applicable product forms before checking a section or weld.
The amendment also updates references tied to material standards such as EN 1706:1998 and EN 755-2:2008. In practice, this keeps the design values aligned with the current product standards used for aluminium extrusions and castings.
Member stability and buckling
Clause 6.3.1.3 gives the relative slenderness expression and the buckling-length rule for members, and Table 6.8 gives buckling-length factors for different end conditions. For a designer, this is the basis for compression-member checks: choose the support condition, determine the effective buckling length and then verify the member resistance.
The amendment also adds a note for members with local welds, pointing the user to the slenderness parameter for the welded section. That matters because welded zones can govern stability checks even when the gross section looks adequate.
Combined actions and plate resistance
Clauses 6.5.4 to 6.5.6 clarify how transverse stress gradients in rectangular plates are converted into axial force and bending moment, and how the combined effect with shear is checked. In practice, the designer does not treat the plate as a single simple load case - the actions are split and then verified together against the interaction rule.
Connections, bolts and pins
Clause 8.1.1 updates the recommended partial factors for joints, covering members, bolts, rivets, pins, welded connections, slip resistance and adhesive-bonded connections. This is important because the partial factor chosen directly affects the design resistance used in calculations.
Clause 8.3 gives the selection logic for joints under impact, vibration or load reversal. It distinguishes when welding, preloaded bolts, injection bolts, fitted bolts or bearing-type bolts are appropriate, so the joint type matches the service conditions.
Clause 8.5.1 adds conditions for oversized holes in Category A bolted connections. Clause 8.5.5 reduces design shear resistance when bolts have cut threads or when oversized or slotted holes are used. In practice, these rules control how much tolerance can be accepted before the connection strength is reduced.
Clauses 8.5.14.2 and 8.5.14.3 give geometry and resistance rules for pin connections, supported by Figure 8.12, Figure 8.13 and Table 8.7. These clauses matter when a connection must rotate or be repeatedly assembled and disassembled, because they set the plate size, pin checks and bearing limits.
Welds and effective length
Clause 8.6.3.3 sets the effective-length rules for fillet welds, including the treatment of short welds and long welds with non-uniform stress. Clause 8.6.3.4 also clarifies where stresses are checked - at the toe, the fusion boundary and the effective throat section depending on weld type. For a fabricator or designer, this affects both weld sizing and the section of the weld that governs resistance.
Reliability differentiation and execution class
Informative Annex A links consequence class, service category, production category and execution class. It is used to choose the level of design supervision and the execution requirements for the structure, and it recommends EXC2 when no execution class is specified. That makes Annex A useful when the project team needs to turn structural importance and fabrication complexity into an execution specification.
What terms does SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 define?
- Consequence class (CC) - Annex A uses CC1, CC2 and CC3 to describe the consequences of failure for a structure or component.
- Execution class (EXC) - EXC1 to EXC4 set how demanding the execution and inspection requirements are for aluminium structures.
- Service category (SC) - SC1 and SC2 distinguish quasi-static action conditions from cases with repeated actions that need fatigue-type inspection treatment.
- Production category (PC) - PC1 is for non-welded components and PC2 is for welded components.
- Relative slenderness (λ) - This is the member slenderness measure used in buckling checks in Clause 6.3.1.3.
- HAZ-factor - This is the factor used for heat-affected zone material properties in Table 3.2b.
- Partial safety factor (γM) - This is the factor applied to design resistances for members and joints.
Who uses SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009?
Structural engineers use SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 to design aluminium members, connections and welds. Checking engineers, quality managers and fabricators use it to set execution class, inspection level and acceptable joint details. Buyers and project owners use it when they need a contract basis for aluminium structural work under the Eurocode system.
What changed in SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 is an amendment to EN 1999-1-1:2007. It updates terminology and references throughout the document, revises Table 3.2b with additional alloy data, clarifies member and joint calculation rules in Clauses 5 to 8, and replaces Annex A with a new informative text on reliability differentiation. It also aligns several references with EN 1090-2, EN 1090-3, EN 1706:1998, EN 755-2:2008 and EN 12681.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009?
- EN 1990 - provides the basis of structural design and the reliability framework used by Eurocode 9.
- EN 1991 - provides actions on structures, which are needed for the design combinations.
- EN 1090-1 - supports conformity assessment of structural components.
- EN 1090-2 - is referenced in the updated document text for execution-related cross-references.
- EN 1090-3 - gives the technical requirements for aluminium structures and the execution rules used in Annex A and joint details.
- EN 12681 - is referenced for examination terminology in the aluminium casting context.
- EN 1706:1998, EN 755-2:2008 and EN 508-2 - provide product and material references used in the updated alloy and product data.
What does the SIST EN 1999-1-1:2007/A1:2009 document contain?
The document contains amended material property tables, buckling and slenderness formulas, member and plate resistance rules, and detailed joint provisions for bolts, pins and welds. It also includes informative Annex A with tables for consequence class, service category, production category and execution class, plus guidance for choosing an execution class. Figures and tables such as Table 3.2b, Table 6.8, Table 8.1, Table 8.7, Figure 8.12 and Figure 8.13 support design checks and connection detailing.
