Overview
SIST EN 60512-16-16:2008 is a European standard developed by CLC, aligned with IEC 60512-16-16:2008, that specifies mechanical test methods for connectors used in electronic equipment. The focus of this part is on evaluating the torsional strength of fixed male tabs in connectors. This standard defines the procedures and requirements to determine if these components can withstand specified torque forces without permanent damage or performance degradation.
By establishing a uniform test method, SIST EN 60512-16-16:2008 ensures the durability and reliability of connector tabs in electronic devices, which is critical for maintaining signal integrity and mechanical stability in various applications.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
This standard applies to electromechanical components under IEC technical committee 48 and similar devices where specified. Its main objective is to quantify the torsional strength of fixed male tabs in connectors to verify their mechanical robustness.Test Specimen Preparation
Tests are conducted on connectors equipped with one or more fixed male tabs. Specimens may be wired or preconditioned according to the detail specification.Testing Equipment and Setup
A universal testing machine with appropriate fixtures is used to apply controlled torque to the male tab. The test mounts the connector as specified and applies torsion in the specified direction.Test Methodology
- Torque is steadily increased from zero to a defined maximum and held for 1 minute.
- After removal of torque, the permanent displacement of the tab is measured to assess deformation.
- Testing covers at least 10 tabs from three specimens, ensuring coverage across the connector insert.
Acceptance Criteria
- Permanent displacement must not exceed limits set in the detail specification.
- No visible defects that impair connector function should occur, verified by visual inspection before and after testing per IEC 60512-1-1.
- Mating tests with counterparts confirm continued connector functionality.
Specification Details
Detail specifications must define preconditioning, wiring, mounting, torque values, allowable permanent set, specimen quantity, and any method deviations.
Applications
SIST EN 60512-16-16:2008 is essential for manufacturers and testers of:
Electrical connectors in electronic equipment that require mechanical reliability under torsional forces, such as in industrial machinery, consumer electronics, telecommunications, and automotive electronics.
Connector design validation to confirm that male tabs maintain mechanical and electrical integrity after exposure to specified torsional stresses.
Quality assurance programs for ensuring long-term connector durability and compliance with international mechanical testing standards.
Component specification drafting, providing clear test parameters and acceptance criteria for connector suppliers and purchasers.
By adhering to SIST EN 60512-16-16:2008, stakeholders improve product reliability, reduce failure risks due to mechanical stress, and meet regulatory and market requirements.
Related Standards
EN 60512-1 and EN 60512-1-100 – These define the general requirements and test methodologies for connectors and form the foundation for Part 16-16 testing procedures.
IEC 60512 series – A comprehensive set of international standards covering different mechanical and electrical tests for connectors used in electronic equipment.
IEC 60512-1-1 – Focuses on visual examination test methods essential for verifying specimen condition before and after mechanical testing.
Summary
SIST EN 60512-16-16:2008 establishes a rigorous, internationally harmonized test method for assessing the torsional strength of fixed male tabs in electronic connectors. This standard is critical to ensuring reliable mechanical performance and functional integrity of connectors subjected to torsional forces during installation or operation. It provides manufacturers, designers, and quality engineers with a clear framework to test, qualify, and specify connector components in demanding electronic applications.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
