Overview
SIST EN 16245-1:2013 is a European Standard developed by CEN that defines the general requirements for declaring raw material characteristics used in the manufacturing of fibre-reinforced plastic composites. This standard aims to ensure transparency and consistent communication of essential material properties to facilitate quality control, traceability, and compliance in composite materials production.
The standard specifically covers a broad range of raw materials including thermoset resins (polyesters and vinyl esters), glass and carbon fibres, knitted/stitched fabrics, as well as foam and balsa core materials. A key component of SIST EN 16245-1:2013 is the requirement for a Certificate of Analysis (CoA), which verifies that delivered materials conform to the declared quality and material properties.
This part of the standard serves as the foundation for more specific parts addressing individual material categories in further detail.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
EN 16245-1 applies to resins, curing systems, additives, modifiers, fibres, fabrics, and core materials used in fibre-reinforced plastic composites. It sets out minimum general information to be declared for these raw materials.Declaration Content
The declaration must include a clear material identification system:- Material type (e.g., polyester resin, carbon fibre)
- Unique material number or code
- Manufacturer and supplier details
- Manufacturing location
- Shelf life and packaging information
- Transportation and storage requirements beyond Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions
Documentation and Labelling
Materials must be delivered with specific documentation:- Complete traceability (batch or lot numbers)
- Quantity and date of production
- Expiry date based on shelf life
Labels on each package or delivery unit must reflect these details and comply with applicable legislations.
Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
The CoA is a formal document provided on request, confirming that material properties meet the declared values such as nominal, mean, or guaranteed minimum/maximum values. It includes:- Material and traceability information
- Test results compliant with corresponding EN 16245 parts
- Batch identification and material code for full traceability
Standardized Units
All declarations and documentation use SI units per ISO 80000-1, ensuring international consistency.
Applications
SIST EN 16245-1:2013 is vital for industries relying on high-performance fibre-reinforced plastic composites, including:
Aerospace and Automotive Manufacturing
To ensure raw materials exhibit consistent quality and meet safety-critical standards.Marine and Construction Sectors
For reliable specification of composite materials with well-documented material properties.Supplier-User Communication
