Overview
The draft European Standard prEN 601:2025, developed by CEN/TC 132, defines the chemical composition requirements for aluminium and aluminium alloy castings intended for food contact. This standard supersedes EN 601:2004 and provides updated limits on alloying elements and impurities to ensure safety, regulatory compliance, and suitability for applications involving direct contact with foodstuffs.
The document covers materials in various forms including ingots, liquid metals, and finished cast articles, addressing the maximum permissible content of specific alloying elements and metal impurities that could affect the safety and quality of food contact products.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
Specifies limits on alloying elements and impurities in cast aluminium and aluminium alloys used for manufacturing food contact articles.Chemical Composition Limits
Sets exact maximum mass content percentages for elements such as silicon, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, chromium, zinc, tin, zirconium, titanium, and bismuth.Cast Aluminium Composition
- Iron + silicon: ≤ 1.0%
- Chromium, copper, magnesium, manganese, nickel, zinc, titanium, tin: ≤ 0.10% each
- Copper may be up to 0.20% if chromium and manganese are below 0.05%
Cast Aluminium Alloys Composition
Defines broader limits for alloys depending on their intended use in food contact applications, with toxicological considerations guiding these thresholds.Conformity and Compliance Demonstration
Describes quality assurance requirements including raw material qualification, product traceability, and independent certification (EN 10204 inspection certificate type 3.1) to confirm compliance with chemical composition limits.Regulatory Alignment
References European Parliament Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and waste, ensuring that cast aluminium materials align with existing food contact and environmental legislation.
Applications
Food Packaging
Cast aluminium alloys selected under prEN 601:2025 are particularly relevant for food packaging materials, where controlling heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium is critical to meet safety standards.Kitchenware and Food Processing Equipment
Cast aluminium components such as pots, pans, cooking utensils, and parts of machinery that have direct contact with food benefit from compliance with these chemical composition requirements to prevent contamination.Food Storage and Handling
Articles such as containers and trays made from aluminium castings must adhere to the limits on alloying elements to ensure non-toxicity over prolonged food exposure.Quality Control in Manufacturing
Foundries and manufacturers use this standard to establish quality assurance protocols verifying that incoming materials and final cast products meet defined chemical composition boundaries essential for food safety.
