(Main)Fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors - Sampling and sample preparation - Part 3: Sampling of static heaps
- Abstract
This document is applicable to the sampling of solid fertilizers and liming materials that have a uniform composition and have no tendency to segregate.
NOTE 1 The term product is used throughout the body of this document and is understood to include fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors unless otherwise indicated.
NOTE 2 Manufacturers, importers and sellers can choose to use this method to obtain samples of other products or blends as well as long as both parties to a transaction agree. The build-up of a static heap often leads to granulometric segregation, which makes the collection of a truly representative sample of many products and blends unlikely.
NOTE 3 It is the responsibility of manufacturers, importers and sellers, however, to ensure they supply a product that complies with its label declaration at the moment of delivery and fulfils the expectations of the end user at the moment of application.
NOTE 4 A method of obtaining a screening sample from a static heap can be found in Annex B.

oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026 is a draft European Standard from CEN, adopted in Slovenia by SIST, for sampling solid fertilizers and liming materials from static heaps. It specifies how to plan, take, combine and report samples so a batch can be checked for composition and properties by manufacturers, importers, sellers, laboratories and other users who need a representative sample.
What does oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026 applies to sampling of solid fertilizers and liming materials with uniform composition and no tendency to segregate. Throughout the document, the word product also covers fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors unless stated otherwise. The standard also allows use for other products or blends if both parties to the transaction agree, and Annex B gives a screening sample method from a static heap.
The document is organized into seven clauses and two informative annexes:
- Clause 1 Scope
- Clause 2 Normative references
- Clause 3 Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 Sampling plans and quantitative data
- Clause 5 Incremental sampling methods
- Clause 6 Final samples
- Clause 7 Sampling report
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Determination of mass/volume of a static heap, with examples for conical heaps and partly filled storage boxes |
| Annex B | Alternative method according to GOST, for screening samples |
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026?
Build the sampling plan
Clause 4 requires the sampler to describe the batch before sampling starts, including type, texture, colour, storage conditions and foreign matter. The plan must define the batch boundary, the batch mass or volume, the sampling units, the sampling points and the minimum incremental sample mass. In practice, this means the sampler must decide in advance how the heap will be divided and documented, rather than taking samples from convenient spots.
Divide the heap into sampling units
Clause 4.5 sets the minimum number of sampling units by batch size, and at least 10 units are selected randomly for sampling. The sampling units must represent approximately equal surface areas. This matters because sampling only around the base or from one part of the heap is not representative.
Take incremental samples correctly
Clause 4.6 requires one incremental sample from each selected unit, with all incremental samples of approximately equal mass. The minimum mass is 250 g, or 500 g for liming materials coarser than 80 % passing 0,315 mm. Clause 5 adds that sampling equipment must be clean, dry and inert, and the opening must be wide enough for the largest particles. This helps prevent contamination and loss of material characteristics.
Follow the prescribed sampling method
Clause 5 says the uppermost layer must be excluded if it shows encrustation or other visible change from the rest of the heap, and that exclusion must be documented. When a spear or tube shovel is used, the device is inserted at 45° to the base or at right angles to the surface layer. In practice, the sampler must reach below the surface so the sample reflects the heap, not just the crust.
Combine, divide and package final samples
Clause 5 requires all incremental samples to be mixed into a combined sample, and Clause 6 requires division into final samples using EN 1482-1:2024. Final samples must be packaged and handled according to EN 1482-1:2024. This is the stage that prepares the material for laboratory testing or retention samples.
Record the sampling
Clause 7 requires a sampling report in line with EN 1482-1:2024 for bulk static heaps. The document notes that photographing the heap can be useful. For buyers and quality teams, the report is the record that shows how the sample was taken and what part of the batch it represents.
What terms does oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026 define?
- Sampling unit - the area of the surface of the material in the static heap from which a sample is taken.
- Sampling point - the point within a sampling unit where material is actually collected.
- Static heap - a quantity of product stored in bulk in a single mass.
- Uniform composition - a composition where each physical unit has the same quality traits.
Who uses oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026?
This standard is used by manufacturers, importers and sellers of fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors when they need a representative sample from stored bulk material. It is also used by sampling personnel and laboratories that test batches for composition and properties. The introduction links it to checking compliance with legal requirements and with information or declarations supplied for the product.
What changed in oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026 supersedes EN 1482-3:2024. The foreword states one significant technical change: the scope has been extended to include sampling of uniform organic fertilizers and uniform organo-mineral fertilizers.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026?
- EN 1482-1:2024 - gives the general sampling provisions, sample preparation steps, final sample handling and reporting rules used throughout this part.
- prEN 12944-1 - provides general vocabulary for fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors.
- EN 1482-2 - the companion part for general sample preparation provisions.
- EN 1482-4 - the companion part for sampling for microbial presence.
- GOST 21560.0-82 - referenced in Annex B as the alternative screening method for static heaps.
What does the oSIST prEN 1482-3:2026 document contain?
The document includes one sampling-plan figure for a conical heap, figures for a sampling spear, a tube shovel and spear insertion into the heap, and Table 1 for the minimum number of sampling units by batch size. Annex A gives formulas and worked examples for estimating heap volume and mass. Annex B describes an alternative GOST-based screening method for static heaps.

European foreword
This document (prEN 1482-3:2026) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 260
“Fertilizers and liming materials”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 1482-3:2024.
prEN 1482-3:2026 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to EN 1482-3:2024:
— extension of the scope to include sampling of uniform organic fertilizers and uniform organo-
mineral fertilizers.
EN 1482 “Fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors — Sampling and sample preparation” consists of
four parts:
— Part 1: General sampling provisions;
— Part 2: General sample preparation provisions;
— Part 3: Sampling of static heaps;
— Part 4: Sampling for microbial presence.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CEN by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
Member States.

Introduction
Standardized methods of sampling and analysis are essential in uniformly establishing the compliance
of fertilizing products with legal requirements, as well as any information and/or declarations given on
their supply or readiness for supply.
The aim of these standardized methods is to obtain a representative sample of the whole batch supplied
or ready for supply. General methods to obtain such a sample are given in EN 1482-1.
However, where the product is stored in large static heaps it is not always possible or practical to put
the product into motion for a sampling method according to EN 1482-1 to be used. Research has found
that for a limited number of types of products a representative sample can be obtained by sampling
directly from the static heap.
This document describes the method to be used for sampling static heaps of the specified products
within its scope.
