Overview

EN 60512-15-8:1995 (IEC 60512-15-8) defines a standardised mechanical test method to verify the ability of connector contact retention systems to withstand the application of standardised tooling used for contact insertion and extraction. The test evaluates whether connector contacts and their retention features resist damage or loss of retention when insertion/extraction tools are rotated under axial load, ensuring reliable assembly and serviceability in electronic equipment.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Mechanical test method for resistance of contact retention systems to tool application during contact insertion/extraction.
  • Test specimens: Specimens are fitted with all contacts wired per the detail specification; five contacts are tested for each method.
  • Two test methods:
    • Method 1 - Rotation of the extraction tool: Introduce the extraction tool, apply the specified axial load, perform alternating rotations, then extract and reinsert the contact. Repeat three times per contact.
    • Method 2 - Rotation of the insertion tool: Withdraw and reinsert the contact using the insertion tool under the specified axial load, perform alternating rotations, then extract the tool and withdraw the contact. Repeat three times per contact.
  • Cycles and cavities: Use separate contact cavities for each method; perform the prescribed number of cycles (three) on each of the five contacts.
  • Tool handling: If a tool is damaged during testing, it is replaced and testing continues.
  • Final checks: After testing, perform applicable final measurements such as visual examination (test 1a of IEC 512-2) and contact retention in insert (test 15a of IEC 512-8).
  • Details to be specified in the detail specification: wire type/size, insertion/extraction tool types, axial load on the tool, and the required contact retention force.

Applications and who uses it

  • Connector manufacturers use the standard during product validation and design verification to ensure retention systems tolerate real-world tooling.
  • Test laboratories and QA teams apply it for conformance testing, sample inspections, and supplier qualification.
  • Design and reliability engineers use results to refine contact geometry and retention features to reduce assembly damage and field failures.
  • Procurement and compliance officers reference the standard when specifying connector acceptance criteria.

Related standards

  • IEC 512-2 (IEC 60512-2) - visual examination, continuity and contact resistance tests
  • IEC 512-8 (IEC 60512-8 / IEC 60512-15-1) - connector mechanical tests and contact retention tests
