Overview
SIST EN 16350:2014 is a European Standard established by CEN that sets forth additional requirements and test methods for protective gloves with electrostatic dissipative properties. These gloves are designed specifically for use in environments where flammable or explosive atmospheres may exist, such as those outlined in IEC 60079-32-1. The standard aims to minimize explosion risks by ensuring gloves can safely dissipate electrostatic charges under controlled conditions.
This standard complements general protective glove standards by specifying performance, marking, and information requirements related to electrostatic properties. It excludes gloves intended for protection against mains voltages, welding, or live working (as covered in EN 60903 and EN 12477). SIST EN 16350:2014 is essential for manufacturers, safety professionals, and users working in hazardous atmospheric conditions where electrostatic discharge could trigger ignition.
Key Topics
Scope and Application:
SIST EN 16350:2014 applies to electrostatic dissipative protective gloves used in potentially explosive environments. It does not cover gloves for electronic device protection, welding, or electrical insulation for live work.Electrostatic Property Requirements:
Gloves must have a vertical electrical resistance (Rv) less than 1.0 × 10^8 ohms to qualify as electrostatic dissipative, tested following specific procedures.Material and Design Constraints:
Gloves should avoid electrically conductive connections such as metal rivets and must have permanently attached external components (labels, reflective stripes). Hook and loop adjustment systems are prohibited to prevent electrostatic hazards.Testing Methods:
Vertical resistance measurements are to be conducted on palm specimens under controlled environmental conditions (23 ± 1 °C temperature, 25 ± 5% relative humidity), using test apparatus compliant with EN 1149-2:1997 or EN 61340-2-3 standards.Marking and Manufacturer Information:
Markings follow EN 420 general glove requirements and must include warnings about proper earthing, restricted glove handling in explosive atmospheres, and limitations in oxygen-enriched environments. Manufacturers must provide vertical resistance test data and essential instructions for safe use.Safety Notes:
Electrostatic dissipative gloves are only effective if the wearer is properly earthed through a resistance less than 10^8 ohms, typically by combining glove use with appropriate footwear.
Applications
SIST EN 16350:2014 protective gloves are crucial in industries and settings such as:
Petrochemical and Chemical Plants:
Where flammable gases or vapors may form explosive atmospheres.Pharmaceutical Manufacturing:
Protecting workers handling volatile solvents and powders prone to ignition by static electricity.Fuel Stations and Storage Facilities:
Reducing ignition risks during fuel dispensing or storage operations.Paint Shops and Coating Operations:
Where electrostatic dissipation can prevent dangerous sparks.Mining and Explosive Handling:
Enhancing personnel safety in environments with combustible dust or gases.
Using gloves compliant with SIST EN 16350:2014 helps employers meet safety regulations and reduce fire and explosion hazards related to static electricity. Combined with suitable grounding and workplace protocols, these gloves safeguard workers and equipment in sensitive zones.

The SIST EN 16350:2014 standard, titled "Protective gloves - Electrostatic properties," offers a critical framework for safety in environments where flammable or explosive atmospheres may exist. The scope of this European Standard delineates specific requirements for protective gloves, focusing particularly on their electrostatic properties. This characteristic is paramount for minimizing explosion risks, especially in industrial settings that utilize flammable materials. One of the key strengths of this standard is its comprehensive delineation of performance requirements, testing methods, and marking protocols for electrostatic dissipative protective gloves. These provisions ensure that gloves not only meet safety benchmarks but also provide essential guidance for manufacturers and users regarding proper use and application contexts. By specifying that electrostatic dissipative protective gloves are only effective if worn with a resistance less than 10^8 Ω, it addresses a crucial factor in safety compliance. The standard’s relevance is underscored by its clear boundaries regarding what it does not cover. By excluding protective measures for electronic devices, mains voltages, insulative gloves for live working, and welding gloves, the standard emphasizes its specialized focus. This targeted approach allows stakeholders to clearly understand the specific applications addressed by the side, while also guiding them toward appropriate standards for other safety needs. Furthermore, the statement regarding the requirements being potentially insufficient in oxygen-enriched flammable atmospheres emphasizes the need for cautious application and consultation of other relevant standards that may address such specific risks, hence promoting a holistic understanding of safety. Overall, SIST EN 16350:2014 serves as a vital resource for industries that operate in hazardous environments, ensuring that the use of electrostatic dissipative protective gloves enhances safety and reduces explosion risks effectively. The precision and clarity of this standard are crucial for making informed decisions regarding protective gear in potentially explosive settings.
