Overview

EN 2266-003:2005 is a CEN (Aerospace series) product standard that defines the characteristics of ink jet printable electrical cables for use in aircraft on‑board electrical systems. It applies to cables designed for continuous operating temperatures between −55 °C and 200 °C and requires that the same cables also be markable by hot‑stamp printing in accordance with EN 3838. This standard supports consistent material, construction and test requirements for high‑temperature aerospace cabling.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Temperature range: Rated for operation between −55 °C and 200 °C.
  • Materials and construction:
    • Conductors per EN 2083 (copper or copper alloy).
    • Insulation composed of two polyimide layers (nominal 30 µm each) each coated both sides with 2.5 µm fluorocarbon; layers wound with ≥51% overlap and opposite winding directions.
    • Top coat: dispersion fluorocarbon, ≥10 µm wall thickness, formulated to accept user‑applied ink‑jet marking; required for core use in multicore cables.
  • Marking: Accepts both ink jet printable and hot stamp marking methods; hot‑stamp marking must comply with EN 3838.
  • Performance and tests: Reference to EN 3475‑100 test methods. Key tests include:
    • Ohmic resistance, dimensions, mass and voltage proof
    • Insulation/surface resistance and overload resistance
    • Accelerated ageing and thermal endurance: 40 000 h at 200 °C
    • Thermal shock, shrinkage, delamination, bending, cold bend
    • Flammability (extinguishing time ≤ 3 s), smoke density, toxicity
    • Mechanical tests: dynamic cut‑through, torsion, tensile, scrape abrasion, strippability, and marking permanence

Applications

  • Wiring harness cores and single‑core cables in commercial and military aircraft where high temperature performance and durable, legible marking are required.
  • Use in avionics, environmental control, engine bay, and other on‑board systems exposed to elevated temperatures or requiring long thermal endurance.
  • Suitable as cores for multicore cable assemblies when top coat specification is met.

Who uses this standard

  • Aerospace OEMs and subcontractors (harness and cable manufacturers)
  • Electrical and harness design engineers
  • Procurement and quality assurance teams responsible for material acceptance and certification
  • Maintenance and repair organizations specifying replacement cables

Related standards

  • EN 2266‑002 (General requirements for same cable family)
  • EN 2083 / EN 2084 (Conductors and single‑core cable technical specs)
  • EN 3475‑100 (Aerospace cable test methods)
  • EN 3838 (User‑applied markings on aircraft cables)
  • EN 9133 (Quality assurance / qualification procedure)
