SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of the European amendment EN 60335-2-73/A1, based on IEC 60335-2-73:2002/A1:2006. It updates the safety requirements for fixed immersion heaters used in household and similar electrical appliances, with particular attention to installation, marking, and abnormal operation.

What does SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 specify?

SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 specifies amendments to the base European standard for fixed immersion heaters. It does not stand alone as a full product standard; it modifies selected clauses of EN 60335-2-73:2003.

The amendment text is organized around these parts of the standard:

  • Introduction
  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 6 - Classification
  • Clause 7 - Marking and instructions
  • Clause 19 - Abnormal operation

In practice, that means the document is mainly for checking whether the base safety standard needs to be read with these extra or revised points in mind for fixed immersion heater applications.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006?

SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 changes a small number of safety points rather than rewriting the whole standard. The most important practical effect is that it clarifies the installation conditions for certain immersion heaters and adjusts how they are handled in instructions and abnormal-operation testing.

Scope and safety context

The Introduction is amended to state that the standard also covers abnormal situations that can be expected in practice and considers electromagnetic phenomena that may affect safe operation. In practice, this tells manufacturers and test engineers to look beyond normal use and assess realistic fault or disturbance conditions.

Clause 1 adds the words open to the atmosphere after water tank in the scope text. This narrows the installation context in the wording of the standard and helps users identify whether a product falls under this part.

Classification

Clause 6.2 has an addition deleted. For users of the standard, this means the amended classification text must be read without that extra item from the previous version.

Marking and instructions

Clause 7.12.1 adds a statement for cases where it applies: the immersion heater is to be installed only in a system where the heating element is always below water level, such as in a cistern-fed tank. In practice, this affects installation instructions and product labeling, because the user must be told when the heater depends on permanent submersion.

Abnormal operation testing

Clause 19.2 adds that the abnormal-operation test is not carried out on immersion heaters intended for systems where the heating element is always below water level, such as a cistern-fed tank. For testing and conformity assessment, this is important because it changes whether a particular product is subjected to that test.

What terms does SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 define?

  • fixed immersion heaters - Immersion heaters intended for a fixed installation, which is the product type covered by this amendment.
  • cistern-fed tank - A system mentioned in the amendment where the heating element is always below water level.
  • open to the atmosphere - The scope wording added to identify the water-tank condition addressed by the amendment.
  • abnormal situations - Conditions expected in practice outside normal operation, which the introduction says are taken into account.
  • electromagnetic phenomena - Effects that can influence safe operation and are explicitly considered in the introduction.
  • CENELEC - The European electrotechnical committee that approved the amendment as EN 60335-2-73/A1.
  • IEC - The International Electrotechnical Commission, whose amendment text is the basis for this European amendment.

Who uses SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006?

SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 is used by manufacturers of household and similar electrical appliances, especially those making fixed immersion heaters. It is also used by safety engineers, test laboratories, certification bodies, quality managers, and buyers who need to check product suitability for water-heating installations.

These users rely on it for product design decisions, installation instructions, safety testing, and conformity assessment of heater systems that may be installed in tanks or similar water-heating arrangements.

What changed in SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 modifies EN 60335-2-73:2003. The amendment:

  • expands the introduction to cover expected abnormal situations and electromagnetic phenomena,
  • adds open to the atmosphere to the scope wording for the water tank case,
  • deletes an addition in Clause 6.2,
  • adds a marking and instruction statement in Clause 7.12.1 for heaters that must always remain below water level,
  • exempts certain heaters from the abnormal-operation test in Clause 19.2,
  • replaces the common modifications in EN 60335-2-73:2003 with the IEC text and withdraws those common modifications.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006?

  • EN 60335-2-73:2003 - the base European standard that this amendment modifies.
  • IEC 60335-2-73:2002/A1:2006 - the international amendment text that CENELEC approved without modification.
  • IEC 60335-2-73:2002 - the underlying international part 2-73 standard for fixed immersion heaters.

What does the SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 document contain?

The document contains the formal foreword, the endorsement notice, and the amendment text itself. The amendment text gives revised wording for the Introduction and short changes to Clauses 1, 6, 7, and 19.

It is focused on practical safety details rather than a full rewrite. The content is used when designing fixed immersion heaters, writing installation instructions, and deciding whether the abnormal-operation test applies to a particular heater arrangement.
