Overview

EN 60191-6-8:2001 (IEC 60191-6-8:2001) is a mechanical standardization guide for glass sealed ceramic quad flatpack (G‑QFP) surface-mounted semiconductor device packages. Published by CLC/CENELEC and adopted from the IEC text, the standard provides common outline drawings and dimensional rules to standardize package outlines and achieve interchangeability across G‑QFP types, materials and structures.

Key Topics

  • Scope and objective: Standardizes outline drawings and dimensions for G‑QFP to enable mechanical interchangeability and consistent documentation.
  • Definitions: Clarifies terms such as G‑QFP (glass sealed package with gull‑wing leads in four directions for PCB surface mounting).
  • Pin numbering: Specifies the index area (upper‑left when viewed from seating plane) and counter‑clockwise terminal numbering starting at pin 1.
  • Dimension groups:
    • Group 1 - dimensions for mounting and interchangeability (package body, lead pitch, body sizes).
    • Group 2 - dimensions for mounting and gauging (lead positions, reference datums).
    • Group 3 - dimensions relevant to automated handling.
    • Group 4 - informational dimensions (e.g., clearance zones).
  • Recommended pitches and nominal values: Supports common lead pitches (iei) such as 1.0, 0.8, 0.65, 0.5 and 0.4 mm and a range of package body sizes and terminal counts.
  • Ceramic thickness guidance: Recommended ceramic part thickness values (for example base and cap ~1.27 mm, frame and lid ~0.76 mm).
  • Notes on sealing and datum selection: Addresses seal mismatching, glass protrusion, and why lead‑frame based datums are used for gauging and handling.

Applications

Who uses EN 60191-6-8:

  • Package designers and semiconductor manufacturers creating G‑QFP outlines and mechanical drawings.
  • PCB designers and layout engineers ensuring pad layouts and clearances match standardized package dimensions.
  • Assembly and test engineers specifying handling, gauging and automated pick‑and‑place requirements.
  • Component procurement and quality teams validating mechanical interchangeability between suppliers. Practical uses include producing compliant outline drawings, defining footprint libraries, ensuring accurate pick‑and‑place tooling, and achieving cross‑vendor package interchangeability.

Related Standards

  • IEC/EN 60191 series - other parts covering mechanical standardization of semiconductor devices.
  • National adoptions and CENELEC implementations of IEC 60191 documents.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or
