SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60512-15-4:2008, identical to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60512-15-4:2008. It gives a standard mechanical test method for connectors for electronic equipment to measure the force needed to insert, release and extract contacts in their intended position. Engineers, test labs and specification writers use it when a detail specification needs a repeatable contact force test.

What does SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 specify?

SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 specifies a standard test method for connectors for electronic equipment, and it can also be used for similar devices when a detail specification calls for it. The method is focused on contact insertion, release and extraction force, so it is the right document when the practical question is how much force a contact needs to enter, latch in, or come out of the connector.

The document is organized into five clauses and one normative annex.

AnnexWhat it covers
ZANormative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications

The main clauses are:

  • Clause 1 - Scope and object
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Preparations
  • Clause 4 - Test method
  • Clause 5 - Details to be specified

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008?

SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 makes the test repeatable by fixing how the specimen is prepared, how contacts are selected, and how forces are measured. In practice, the detail specification has to fill in the product-specific points, while this standard defines the test framework.

  • Clause 3.1 requires the specimen to be a connector with its terminations wired as specified in the detail specification. Accessories that are not part of the contact system may be removed, and any preconditioning required by the detail specification is applied. This matters because the test has to reflect the product being qualified, not an arbitrary setup.

  • Clause 3.1 also says contact retention devices are positioned so they do not influence the test, unless they are part of the normal insertion and extraction process. That keeps the measured force tied to the contact system itself.

  • Clause 3.2 and 3.3 require suitable force-measuring equipment, such as a universal materials testing machine, and any insertion or extraction tools specified for the product. In practice, the lab has to use controlled loading and the same aids that the product expects.

  • Clause 4.1.1 sets the sample selection rule: unless the detail specification says otherwise, 3 connectors are tested, and 20% of the contacts are selected at random, but not fewer than 6. One selected contact should be near the periphery and one near the centre; for connectors with six or fewer contacts, all contacts are used.

  • Clause 4.1.2 and 4.1.3 require insertion using the specified tool, lubricant and other aids, and extraction in a similar manner. The procedure checks that contacts reach the intended position and latch or lock correctly; if the contacts are non-removable, the extraction part does not apply.

  • Clause 4.1.4 allows repeated insertion and extraction cycles when the detail specification asks for them. That is useful when the reader needs to know how the connector behaves after repeated handling, not just on the first insertion.

  • Clause 4.2 requires visual examination before and after testing according to IEC 60512-1-1, and it requires the insertion and extraction forces to be measured and recorded during the test. The measured values must stay within the limits stated in the detail specification.

  • Clause 5 lists what the detail specification has to state, including the number of connectors, preconditioning, wiring, mounting, lubricant or sealant, maximum forces, number of cycles, whether the contact is non-removable, and any permitted deviation. This is the practical link between the generic method and a specific product requirement.

What terms does SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 define?

SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 uses a small set of procedure terms that matter to the test.

  • Detail specification - the product-specific document that sets how this test is applied and gives the force limits and any special conditions.
  • Specimen - the connector sample under test, including its terminations and wiring as specified.
  • Preconditioning - any preparation applied to the specimen before the force test.
  • Contact retention device - a part that holds contacts in place and is positioned so it does not distort the force measurement unless it is part of normal operation.
  • Insertion tool - the tool used to place a contact into the cavity.
  • Extraction force / release - the force needed to remove a contact or unlock it from its latched position.
  • Non-removable contact - a contact that is not intended to be extracted, so the extraction step is not applied.

Who uses SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008?

SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 is used by connector manufacturers, test laboratories, quality engineers and specification writers. They use it to qualify contact systems, verify product behavior against a detail specification, and compare insertion and extraction force results in a controlled way. Buyers and procurement teams can also use it when they need a clear test method to put into a product requirement or acceptance plan.

What changed in SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 cancels and replaces test 15d of IEC 60512-8:1993.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008?

  • IEC 60512-1-1 - provides the general visual examination method used before and after the force test.
  • EN 60512-1 - explains the structure of the EN 60512 series and is read together with this part.
  • EN 60512-1-100 - also explains the structure of the EN 60512 series and is read together with this part.

What does the SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 document contain?

SIST EN 60512-15-4:2008 contains the specimen preparation rules, the test equipment expectations, the contact selection rule, the insertion and extraction procedure, and the before-and-after visual examination step. It also lists the information that the detail specification has to provide so the method can be applied to a specific connector design. Annex ZA gives the European mapping for the normative reference.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in
