SIST EN 50343:2014/A1:2018
(Amendment)Railway applications - Rolling stock - Rules for installation of cabling
Railway applications - Rolling stock - Rules for installation of cabling
This European Standard specifies requirements for the installation of cabling on railway vehicles and within electrical enclosures on railway vehicles, including magnetic levitation trains and trolley buses.
NOTE: With respect to trolley buses, this European Standard applies to the whole electric traction system, including current collecting circuits, power converters and the respective control circuits. The installation of other circuits is covered by street vehicle standards for example those for combustion driven buses. This European Standard covers cabling for making electrical connections between items of electrical equipment, including cables, busbars, terminals and plug/socket devices. It does not cover special effect conductors like fibre optic cables or hollow conductors (waveguides). The material selection criteria given here are applicable to cables with copper conductors. This European Standard is not applicable to the following: - special purpose vehicles, such as track-laying machines, ballast cleaners and personnel carriers; - vehicles used for entertainment on fairgrounds; - vehicles used in mining; - electric cars; - funicular railways. As the field of cabling in rolling stock is also dealt with in the cable makers’ standard, references are made to EN 50264 series, EN 50306 series, EN 50382 series and EN 50355. This European Standard applies in conjunction with the relevant product and installation standards. Stricter requirements than those given in this European Standard may be necessary.

Overview
EN 50343:2014/A1:2017 - Railway applications - Rolling stock - Rules for installation of cabling - is a CENELEC European Standard that specifies requirements for installing cabling on railway vehicles and inside electrical enclosures on those vehicles. It covers conventional rolling stock, magnetic levitation trains and trolley buses (for which it applies to the whole electric traction system, including current collection circuits, power converters and control circuits). The standard addresses cabling used to make electrical connections between electrical equipment items (cables, busbars, terminals, plug/socket devices).
Key limitations:
- Material selection criteria apply to cables with copper conductors only.
- It does not cover fibre optic cables, hollow conductors (waveguides) or special-purpose vehicles (track-laying machines, ballast cleaners, mine vehicles, funiculars, electric cars, some entertainment vehicles).
- Applies alongside product and installation standards; stricter requirements may be imposed by those or by project rules.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Installation rules for electrical cabling within rolling stock and electrical enclosures.
- Scope of cabling included: power and control conductors, busbars, terminals, plugs/sockets used for onboard electrical connections.
- Material selection principles oriented to copper-conductor cables (insulation, temperature, mechanical protection and ageing considerations).
- Interface with traction systems (explicit coverage for trolley-bus traction and control networks).
- Exclusions and applicability to ensure correct use case (what is not covered).
- Lifecycle and ageing guidance - Amendment A1 clarifies Annex E: Montsinger’s rule must NOT be used to calculate increases in cable lifetime (it is intended only for lifetime reductions and contains safety margins that would mislead if reversed).
Practical applications and users
Who benefits from EN 50343:
- Rolling stock designers and electrical engineers specifying vehicle cabling layouts.
- Installation teams and integrators fitting onboard wiring, busbars and connectors.
- Maintenance engineers and fleet owners creating inspection, repair and replacement regimes.
- Procurement and compliance officers verifying supplier conformity and materials selection.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies assessing electrical installation compliance.
Typical uses:
- Defining cable routing, protection and termination practices on trains and maglev vehicles.
- Selecting copper-conductor cables and connectors compatible with onboard environmental and mechanical stresses.
- Ensuring traction and control cabling on trolley buses meets harmonized European rules.
Related standards

- EN 50306 series
- EN 50382 series
- EN 50355 (EN 50343 is intended to be used in conjunction with relevant product and installation standards; project-specific or national rules may impose stricter requirements.)
