Overview
EN 1069-2:2017 - Water slides: Part 2 - Instructions is a CEN European Standard that specifies the required instructions for use, operation, maintenance, documentation and commissioning of water slides (as defined in EN 1069-1:2017, clause 3.3). Its purpose is to reduce foreseeable risks and improve safety through standardized operational guidance, signage and record-keeping.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to water slides defined in EN 1069-1:2017 and complements the safety requirements/test methods in Part 1.
- Operation and risk assessment
- Requires an operational risk assessment by the operator based on the design risk assessment.
- Identifies specific risks such as user spacing, sliding position, speed differences, water flow changes and risky behaviours.
- Risk reduction and supervision
- Defines risk reduction strategies: permanent staff supervision, technical distance control (e.g., traffic lights, turnstiles), or a combined approach.
- Recommends visual monitoring (monitors at start/end) and compliance with EN ISO 13849-2 for control quality.
- Instructions and technical operation
- Operators must provide written operational procedures covering controls, starting procedures, speed/usage limits, evacuation and environmental limits.
- Maintenance, staff qualifications and spare part specifications must be documented.
- Signage and user information
- Manufacturer must provide required signage at commissioning; operators add slide‑specific signs based on risk assessment.
- Safety signs should follow ISO 3864, ISO 7010, ISO 20712 and ISO 7001; minimum supplementary text height specified (15 mm uppercase).
- Annex A contains safety and information sign templates; Annex B provides risk assessment examples.
- Records, maintenance and inspections
- Incident logbook for recording/analysing accidents and incidents.
- Maintenance/servicing, repair and modification instructions required.
- Routine inspections by operators and independent periodic thorough inspections are mandated.
- Commissioning and water quality
- Commissioning procedures and water quality considerations are included to ensure safe operation before public use.
