Railway applications - Driver's cab - Part 4: Layout and access
This document gives design rules and requirements in order to ensure proper access, lighting, seating and exit of the driver’s cab. The different dimensions are based on the anthropometric data defined in EN 16186-1. The corresponding assessment methods are also included in this standard. It covers the following aspects:
- dimension and interior layout;
- door access, steps, floor characteristics;
- seats dimension and clearance;
- interior cab lighting;
- emergency exit;
- marking and labelling.
This part of the EN 16186 series applies to driver’s cabs of Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU), Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), Railcars, Locomotives and Driving trailers (Driving Coaches).
NOTE 1 This European Standard applies to rolling stock in the scope of Directive 2008/57/EC [6].
This part of the EN 16186 series applies to driver's desks installed on the left, on the right, or in a central position in the driver’s cab. Due to cab space and resulting desk integration constraints, desk layout can vary.
NOTE 2 Due to railway systems constraints, the level of comfort and accessibility provided to the persons outside the anthropometric range defined in EN 16186-1 may vary. Usually the operators manage the potential restrictions, if the driver uses the full range of seat positions (as defined in this standard) combined with extreme body dimensions (as defined in EN 16186-1).
This document is not intended to be applicable for OTMs, tramways, metro and light rail vehicles.

Bahnanwendungen - Führerraum - Teil 4: Gestaltung und Zugang
Dieses Dokument enthält Gestaltungsregeln und Anforderungen, um eine angemessene Ausführung von Zugang, Beleuchtung, Sitzen und Ausstieg aus dem Führerraum sicherzustellen. Die unterschiedlichen Maße basieren auf den in EN 16186 1 festgelegten anthropometrischen Daten. Diese Norm enthält zudem die entsprechenden Bewertungsverfahren. Sie deckt die folgenden Aspekte ab:

Dieser Teil der Normenreihe EN 16186 gilt für Führertische, die links, rechts oder mittig im Führerraum angeordnet sind. Aufgrund der Führerraumgröße und der dadurch bedingten Einschränkungen bei der Integration des Führertisches kann die Gestaltung des Führertischs variieren.
ANMERKUNG 2 Aufgrund von Einschränkungen bei den Eisenbahnsystemen kann der Komfort und Zugang, der Personen außerhalb des in EN 16186 1 definierten anthropometrischen Bereichs geboten wird, abweichen. Le présent document spécifie les règles de conception et donne des exigences pour optimiser la cabine de conduite en termes d'accès, d'éclairage, d'assise et de sortie. Les différentes dimensions s'appuient sur les données anthropométriques définies dans l'EN 16186-1. Les méthodes d'évaluation correspondantes sont également fournies dans cette norme. La présente norme couvre les aspects suivants :

Ta evropski standard določa pravila oblikovanja in smernice za zagotovitev ustreznega dostopa do voznikove kabine, razsvetljave v njej, sedeža in izstopa iz nje. Različne dimenzije temeljijo na antropometričnih podatkih, opredeljenih v standardu EN 16186-1. V ta standard so vključene tudi ustrezne metode ocenjevanja. Zajema naslednje vidike:

Introduction
This part of the EN 16186 series addresses design rules and requirements for the layout and design of
the driver's cab considering operational requirements for train driving, shunting and related
preparatory work as far as driver’s cab interfaces are concerned. It provides current cab design
principles and considers latest available research findings provided by the European Research project
EUDD+ [36].
If a requirement contains an option, the choice of this option is purely up to the applicant.

5 Driver's cab access and egress
5.1 Access, egress and doors
5.1.1 General
5.1.1.1 Access and security
Access to the driver’s cab shall be from the exterior via a direct external door, or through an adjacent
compartment or area behind the cab.
These doors shall be designed to have an operational envelope that does not conflict with the envelope
of another cab access door.
The driver’s cab and its access shall be designed so that the train crew is able to prevent the cab being
accessed by non-authorized persons, whether the cab is occupied or not. This requirement is deemed to
be fulfilled by a locking system.
A cab door locking system shall permit to open any cab door from inside the cab without using any tool
or key.
Egress and access to the driver’s cab shall be possible without any energy supply.
5.1.1.2 Door handles
Driver’s cab internal door handles which are intended to be operated from a standing position shall be
located at a height between 820 mm and 1 200 mm (distance between the rotation point of the handle
and the cab floor). The recommended value for the height of the door handles is 850 mm.
5.1.1.3 Threshold
The height of door threshold shall not be more than:
— 20 mm from the walkable floor for interior doors excluding locomotives;
— 70 mm from the walkable floor for interior doors of locomotives;
— 60 mm from the walkable floor for exterior doors.
5.1.1.4 Ergonomics
For interior handles in regular use at least 40 mm clearance to surrounding surfaces shall be provided.
For exterior handles see EN 16116-1.
5.1.2 External doors
External doors and hand holds shall be designed in accordance with EN 16116-1.
External cab doors when opened shall not infringe the intended maximal construction gauge defined
from gauge rules of the vehicle (see the EN 15273 series).
If cab side door is of a hinged type, it shall be designed to open towards the interior of the cab. This
recommendation does not apply to shunting locomotives or locomotives with central cab and
EMU/DMU where sliding or plug doors are used.
Driver’s cab external doors shall have a rectangular-like shape with a minimum unobstructed passage
height and minimum passage width of:
— 1 675 mm × 500 mm when accessible from outside by foot-steps, or;
— 1 750 mm × 500 mm when accessible from outside on floor level (without foot-steps, e.g. central
cab external door with inside floor and outside gangway on the same level);
— 1 675 × 430 mm for central cab locomotives when accessible from outside by foot-steps, in
accordance with Figure B.2;
— 1 750 mm × 430 mm for central cab locomotives (without foot-steps), in accordance with
Figure B.2.
Driver’s cab external doors should have a rectangular-like shape with a minimum unobstructed passage
of 1 950 mm (height) × 600 mm (width) in accordance with Figure 1.

Dimension r shall have a maximum value of 20 % of the width.
Driver’s cab front facing external doors which are positioned left or right of the vehicle’s longitudinal
axis and open in longitudinal direction may have a trapezium shaped upper area with an angle of the
top outer side. In order to achieve a maximum passage width in the angled upper area of the door, the
maximal construction gauge shall be used to its full extent. This reduction due to the gauge calculation
shall keep a minimum clearance width of 280 mm in the upper area (see Figure B.2).
Cab external doors shall not open unintentionally. External cab doors should have at least two stable
positions: fully open and closed.
5.1.3 Internal doors giving access to the driver's cab
If internal doors lead directly to the passenger area, a device to look from inside the cab shall be
provided, (e.g. by a spy hole).
If direct view from passenger area into cab is possible, the driver should be able to prevent such view,
e.g. by blinds.
Internal doors shall have a rectangular-like minimum unobstructed passage height and passage width
of 1 700 mm × 430 mm. Internal doors should have a rectangular-like minimum unobstructed passage
height and passage width of 1 950 mm (height) × 600 mm (width).
Internal doors which are positioned left or right of the vehicle's longitudinal axis and open in
longitudinal direction may have a trapezium shaped upper area with an angle of the top outer side
(see Figure B.3). In order to achieve a maximum passage width in the angled upper area of the door, the
maximal construction gauge shall be used as a common basis. This reduction due to the gauge
calculation shall keep a minimum clearance width of 280 mm in the upper area.
5.2 Floor and flooring
5.2.1 Floor surface criteria
Walkable floor surfaces shall be slip resistant.
This is deemed to be fulfilled by applying the requirements of CEN/TS 16165, α ≥ 9°.

For minimizing the tripping hazard, the walkable floor of the cab, except for the area up to a maximum
of 25 mm from the walls and for the space under the desk, shall be level (see Figure 2).

This is deemed to be fulfilled by the following criteria:
— on a level track, the walkable floor shall be horizontal with a tolerance of ± 2° except for the
walkable floor areas determined to changes of height, and;
— no irregularity on the walkable floor shall protrude by more than 5 mm.
Door thresholds and foot operated operational elements are not considered as being a floor irregularity.
No deflection of more than 10 mm shall be permitted in the walkable floor, over an area of 5 000 cm ,
due to an applied load of 1 300 N on a surface of maximum 600 cm . This can be demonstrated by
calculation or by test.
NOTE No reference to EN 15663 is given, because the load is associated to the stiffness of the floor and not to
the load calculation for the vehicle.
5.2.2 Inclination, steps and slopes
The walkable floor of the driver's working area (access to the cab and foot rest excluded) shall be
without any steps. Height changes > 4 mm per 100 mm length are not permitted on the walkable cab
floor of the driver's working area. They are permitted between the cab and adjacent compartments.
Height changes of interior walkable floors between the cab and adjacent compartments ≤ 60 mm shall
be achieved by a sloping walkable floor. Height changes > 60 mm and < 120 mm should be avoided.
Height changes ≥ 120 mm shall be achieved by steps which shall have a height h with
120mm ≤ h ≤ 250mm and a depth of ≥ 210 mm. If more than one step is used the depth of the steps
shall be ≥ 270 mm. If there are two or more steps, a handhold (e.g. a handrail or a single handle) should
be provided.
Height changes > 60 mm and < 120 mm should be avoided (if not a single step should be added).
Where the change of height is achieved by a sloping walkable floor, the minimum length of the walkable
slope shall be 300 mm.
Steps immediately adjacent to slopes shall be prohibited.
Sealing plates of door frames and maintenance openings are not considered as being a floor irregularity.
5.3 Windows
5.3.1 Mechanical characteristics of glass
Where glass is used in glazing (including mirrors), it shall be either laminated or toughened glass which
is in accordance with a relevant national or international standard with regard to the quality and area of
use, thereby minimizing the risk to passenger and staff being injured by breaking glass.
5.3.2 Operation of opening windows
Three types of windows are considered in this standard:
— sliding horizontal;
— sliding vertical;
— hinged;
For easy moving upwards and downwards of vertical windows (e.g. to open, or to close) the operating
force should be less than 50 N and shall not be higher than 80 N.
For hinged windows, the operating force should not be higher than 62 N and for pulling not higher than
55 N.
For horizontally sliding windows, the operating force should not exceed 80 N.
5.4 Emergency
5.4.1 Driver's cab emergency exits
5.4.1.1 General
Driver's cab emergency exit and emergency exit clearance shall comply with the requirements of
EN 45545-4:2013, 4.3.1.2.
The lowest point of the emergency exit should be located at no more than 1 350 mm above cab floor
level.
5.4.1.2 Minimum escape route
An exit shall give access to an escape route of a minimum length of 2 m, of a minimum clearance of
height 1 700 mm x width 430 mm (if possible, width should be 600 mm). This escape route and its floor
shall be free of any obstruction; it shall be located on-board the unit, and can be an interior area or an
area opened to the outside. A single step is not considered as an obstruction.
This clearance of height 1 700 mm × width 430 mm shall also be provided from the seat position to the
exit. For requirements for high speed trains see 6.2.2.
The requirements for the minimum escape route do not apply to central cab locomotives.
5.4.1.3 Emergency exit opening
For opening emergency exits, no equipment shall be required with the exception of an emergency
hammer if a non-opening window is used as an emergency exit.
Driver’s cabs shall have at least one interior exit opening outwards. If there is any risk of obstruction
(baggage, passengers), the door shall be of the swing type (opening outwards and inwards) or of the
sliding type.
Interior doors opening outwards within the escape route of the driver should be provided with an
emergency bar to open the door (emergency escape function). If provided, the following should apply:
— the emergency escape function shall function always, irrespective of whether the door is unlocked
or locked;
— in case of an emergency door opening in one direction, it is opened outwards via pushing an
emergency push bar;
— in case of an emergency door opening in both directions the emergency escape function shall be
possible by pushing and pulling the emergency bar for opening outwards and inwards respectively;
— the emergency bar shall cover 60 % of the door frame width;
— in all positions of the door and the emergency bar there shall be a minimum clearance of 50 mm
between the emergency bar and surrounding objects in order to prevent a contusion/injury risk for
the hand;
— when the door is open, there shall be a minimum unobstructed passage of 430 mm width between
the emergency bar in normal (unpressed) state and the doorframe.
5.4.2 Emergency egress from seat
5.4.2.1 Seat design for escape
The driver's seat and the additional seat(s) shall not constitute an obstacle to escape in case of
emergency. In any position of a seat, escape shall be facilitated by the seat design, e.g. by:
— its shape;
— rotation (if provided) without need for operating any device (e.g. unlocking);
— movement of the seat;
— movement of the arm rest (if provided).
In a cab configuration with lateral desk and symmetrical seat locations, the second seat shall fulfil the
same escape requirements.
5.4.2.2 Escape from seat assessment criteria
Escape from the seat to a position beside the seat (both feet on the cab floor and no part of the body still
in touch with the seat) should be possible within 3 s after the requirement (e.g. a verbal command) to
leave the seat and it should be assessed with the following start conditions:
— at vehicle standstill;
— driver in driving and seating position (hands on the desk);
— both feet of the driver on the foot rest;
— by a small seated person with body height in the range of 1,55 m to 1,65 m (in accordance with
EN 16186-1);
— with arm rests, if provided, in their functional position at the beginning of assessment.
Then this test should be repeated for a tall seated person with a body height in the range of 1,81 m to
1,91 m (in accordance with EN 16186-1).
NOTE The test person is supposed to change the settings after the start of the test.
5.4.3 Devices for emergency egress
A device (e.g. a portable ladder or equivalent device) to bridge the gap between emergency exit and
ground for ensuring escape in case of emergency shall be provided in the driver's cab for cabs without
exterior doors and without permanent means of escape inside the cab.
6 Driver's cab dimensions
6.1 Interior
6.1.1 General
The interior layout of the cab shall consider the anthropometric data as set out in EN 16186-1.
6.1.2 Tasks consideration
The cab should be designed in a way that it enables the driver to carry out his tasks efficiently and
safely.
6.1.3 Freedom of movement of staff
The freedom of movement of staff inside the cab shall not be inhibited by obstructions or by awkward
projections.
6.1.4 Prevention of occupational injuries
The interior design of the driver's cab shall prevent occupational injuries.
In the accessible areas of the driver's cab, the internal fittings shall be so designed that staff cannot be
hurt, e.g. by sharp edges, moving parts, protruding objects, etc.
In the accessible areas of the driver's cab, all edges protruding more than 4 mm shall have:
— a radius of at least 2 mm, or
— a chamfer of at least 2 mm × 2 mm.
6.1.5 Surface finish
Gloss values shall be measured with the measuring method according to EN ISO 2813 with an angle of
light beam of 60°, it is allowed to use parts of the cab described below to measure it.
Cab surfaces shall not produce unwanted reflections (e.g. by shiny surfaces). Reflected light shall be
diffused and not concentrated.
This is deemed to be fulfilled by the choice of materials for cab surfaces exposed to light complying with
the following:
— the gloss shall be no more than 30 GU for the desk.
— surfaces of operating panels, frames of displays, front windscreen frames (if integrated part of the
windscreen) and areas on top of the desk reflecting sunlight directly to the front windscreen shall
be matt (GU ≤ 20) in order to avoid reflections (term “front windscreen” from EN 15152);
— for other areas such as ceilings, side walls and doors, the gloss shall be not more than 50 GU;
— in case of cab equipment not meeting this requirement (e.g. mirrors, lamps) they are excluded from
this requirement if they do not reflect light towards the front area as defined above.
6.2 Arrangement of interior space
6.2.1 Interior clearance
The following requirement applies only to cabs without gangway or front centre access door. The
longitudinal distance between the inside face of the front windscreen on a height above floor level of
1 800 mm and the nearest fixed object located behind the driver’s seat, shall be a minimum of 1 200 mm
measured in an area within a distance of 200 mm to 800 mm from either side of the longitudinal vehicle
centre line. At the height of the eye point of the seated tall driver the longitudinal distance to the nearest
fixed object located behind the driver’s seat shall be at least 1 500 mm, see Annex B, Figure B.1.
6.2.2 Headroom for standing
Inside the cab, headroom of at least 1 950 mm shall be provided at all points accessible in the standing
position. Increasing the headroom to at least 2 000 mm is recommended. The minimum height of the
headroom is permitted to be 1 850 mm for the areas above the cab floor adjacent to the side walls. This
area of reduced height shall not be more than 30 % of the whole cab floor area and in addition, the
reduced height shall not be located above the normal driving position as defined in EN 16186-1.
For EMU/DMU with a windscreen inclined by less than 35° from the horizontal or with a maximum
design speed greater than 190 km/h, a lower value for the headroom may also apply forward of the
driver's seat backrest: This value shall not be less than 1 700 mm along the driver’s desk edge in front of
the driver’s seat. In this case, driving in a standing position may not be possible. In case of a sun-blind
located in conflict with this requirement, the height may be further reduced to a minimum of 1 480 mm.
6.2.3 Foot niche clearance
For the total width of the footrest, the minimum vertical clearance above the heel point shall be 660 mm
(see Figure C.1). If an adjustable footrest is provided this figure is valid for its lowest position.
6.2.4 Water tightness
The flooring should be designed to prevent mildew.
Floors shall be designed to prevent water ingress from inside the cab to the floor sub-structure.
If provided, maintenance access shall resist the entrance of water or drainage shall be provided. The
above requirement is deemed to be fulfilled by the following test: water tightness can be tested by
applying 10 L of water at floor level. It shall be evaluated at floor level and 10 mm above it. No water
shall be found beyond the maintenance access.
6.2.5 Foot operated devices on the cab floor
If a foot operated device on the cab floor, but not underneath the desk is requested, it shall be
positioned within a maximum distance of 250 mm from the wall. Irregularity and anti-slipping
requirements for the walkable floor do not apply for this device.
6.3 Driver's desk
6.3.1 Desk arrangement
The driver’s desk should be arranged to enable, in the most commonly used driving position, the driver
to keep a normal posture, without hampering freedom of movement, taking into account the
anthropometric data as set out in EN 16186-1.
Example of desk arrangement is presented in Figure C.1.
EN 16186-2 gives requirements for the layout of devices on the driver's desk.
6.3.2 Thermal conductivity
Desk top surfaces in regular or permanent contact with body parts shall have a thermal conductivity of
less than 1,0 W/(m • K). Mounting screws, document holders and other minor parts should be designed
not to be in permanent contact with body parts. Those parts of control devices within the desk top to be
intended for operating the control device shall have a thermal conductivity of less than 0,4 W/(m • K),
In case of heated surfaces higher values are acceptable.
6.4 Storage space
6.4.1 General
Suitable storage for equipment should be located in the cab. The design should take into account any
risk of injury to the cab occupants. Stored clothing and personal equipment should not interfere with
the driver’s duties or controls.
6.4.2 Hooks and space for personal belongings
In each cab, two hooks or a niche with a clothes rail and a free space (e.g. on the cab floor) for a suitcase
or bag shall be provided.
Following minimum dimensions for the niche are recommended:
— 350 mm × 300 mm × height 1 500 mm for clothes.
If there is no niche, there shall be a free space for personal belongings with the following minimum
dimensions:
— 300 mm × 400 mm × height 400 mm.
A possibility to hang a jacket may be integrated in the rear of the seat. If such a jacket hanger is
provided, the number of hooks in the driver's cab may be reduced to one.
6.4.3 Emergency equipment
Where emergency equipment is provided in or near the driver's cab, storage shall be provided to
ensure that it is accessible and staff can visually check that it is present without having to remove it.
A storage for the emergency equipment shall be provided.
7 Seats
7.1 General
The cab shall be fitted with at least one driver’s seat. The cab shall also be fitted with at least one other
seat that does not need to meet the requirements of the driver’s seat.
The second seat should have a backrest.
The second seat shall meet the requirements of the driver’s seat if, as an operator option, it is intended
to be used by staff with driving duties.
For shunting locomotives it is recommended to install a driver's seat which can be folded away and/or
pushed aside thus giving way for a standing position at the driver’s desk.
The interior layout shall allow both seated and standing driving positions. If restrictions of 6.2.2 for
headroom apply, driving in a standing position may not be possible.
The driver's seat shall face the front windscreen.
The driver's seat cover material should be breathable, cleanable, resistant to electrostatic charge
sufficient to precipitate a shock and resistant to wear and mechanical shock.
The seat shall satisfy to the requirement of EN 45545-2.
For driver's seat design, the weight of the driver shall at least be considered to be in the range of 50 kg
to 130 kg.
The design and allocation of the driver’s seat operating elements should exclude any danger of trapping
of fingers.
After any adjustment, whilst the driver is seated, the driver's seat shall remain in its selected position.
After the driver stands up, when the driver is re-seated, the seat returns to the selected height position.
7.2 Driver's seat ergonomics
Ergonomics and health aspects shall be considered in the design of the driver's seat, its mounting and
its use by the driver. This is deemed to be fulfilled by the application of this standard. All seat
dimensions of Figure A.2 shall be compliant with Table A.1.
The anthropometric data defined in EN 16186-1 shall be used to define the arrangement of the driver's
seat to allow driving from a seated position.
The seated driving position shall enable the driver to operate all primary controls and read all primary
information in seated driving position. This is deemed to be fulfilled by the allocation of primary
controls and information according to EN 16186-2.
The leading edge of the driver's seat shall be rounded with a radius of 5 mm in order to avoid the
compression of the leg muscles.
Effort to rotate the driver's seat away from the forward facing direction shall require (55 ± 10) Nm
initially to release the driver's seat (e.g. by a notch but without any locking device) and less than 25 Nm
for subsequent movement.
Driver's seat functions requiring electric or pneumatic energy can be used.
For facilitating the standing driving position, the clearance between any driver's desk and driver's seat
part shall be enabled to be 190 mm as a minimum as defined in Figure A.1. Assessment may be done by
a half cylinder, the plane of which is located at the centre of the driver's seat cushion front edge
(see Figure A.1).
The minimum clearance around the seat in its maximum backward position should be 250 mm to
provide for the rotating angle (see Figure A.1).
Adjustment of the driver's seat to get the free space needed for the standing position may be provided
e.g. by a parallelogram allowing a forward and backward driver's seat position.
The following requirement applies only to locomotive and may apply to EMU/DMU and driving trailers.
Reaching the standing position from the seated position shall be possible without any rotation of the
driver’s seat.
The controls for adjustment of the driver's seat should be intuitive and accessible in a normal seating
position and designed to prevent the risk of personal injuries. The design and allocation of the driver’s
seat operating elements should ensure functional recognizability via position, form and grouping.
