Overview
EN 50310:2016/A1:2020 (CLC) is an amendment to the European standard that governs telecommunications bonding networks for buildings and other structures. The amendment clarifies terms, updates normative references and refines performance and testing requirements to improve electromagnetic compatibility, safety and system reliability for information technology (IT) and power systems co-located in buildings.
This standard focuses on how bonding networks (protective, dedicated and mesh bonded) interact with cabling, power distribution and lightning protection, and it provides guidance for designers, installers and facility managers responsible for building infrastructure.
Key Topics
- Mesh bonded networks: Identified as the most effective solution at high frequency (>= 1 MHz) and also effective at low frequency (< 1 MHz). The mesh approach enhances EMI immunity and flexibility for cabling and equipment placement.
- Performance targets: The mesh is intended to achieve approximately 1 mΩ DC resistance between adjacent grid points and an inductance of no more than about 6 µH between adjacent points, mitigating steady-state and transient voltages and currents from lightning and power faults.
- Updated definitions: Adds explicit definitions for high frequency (>= 1 MHz) and low frequency (< 1 MHz) to clarify frequency-dependent performance expectations.
- Revised resistance requirements: Tables for DC resistance limits were updated. Example requirements in the amendment include 2.5 mΩ/m for certain protective busbar connections and 1.67 mΩ/m for key telecommunications bonding connections (any point to MET, PBB to SBB, and PBB/SBB to structural steel).
- Testing and measurement: Tests shall use equipment conforming to EN 61557-4 or EN 61557-5, with measured accuracy reported in test documentation.
- Integration with lightning protection: Mesh bonded networks can be used with integrated lightning protection per EN 62305-4; other lightning protection systems may be used with agreed restrictions.
Applications
- New building design and major refurbishments where mesh bonding networks can be implemented most easily.
- Existing buildings where an assessment balances cost, complexity and the required transmission performance for the chosen cabling and applications.
- Facilities requiring enhanced EMI immunity for sensitive IT systems, telecoms rooms, data centres and mixed IT/power environments.
Benefits include improved system resilience to EMI and lightning, clearer testing requirements, and harmonised bonding practices that support modern cabling and IT applications.
Related Standards
- EN 61557-4, EN 61557-5 - equipment for testing resistance of earth connections and equipotential bonding
- EN 62305 (all parts) - protection against lightning
- HD 60364-4-444 - additional guidance on TN-S power distribution and equipotential bonding
- EN 50174 series and EN 50173 series - cabling planning and installation guidance
For designers and installers, EN 50310:2016/A1:2020 provides practical, updated criteria to assess and implement effective telecommunications bonding networks that reduce EMI risk and support reliable IT and power integration in buildings.
