Overview
EN 60155:1995/A1:1995 (Glow‑starters for fluorescent lamps) is the European adoption of IEC 60155:1993 amended in 1995. The amendment updates test methods, adds information relevant to luminaire design, and tightens safety requirements for components used in glow‑starters (starters) for fluorescent and discharge lamps. This standard is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, luminaire designers and procurement/specification teams concerned with reliable lamp starting and safety.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and identity
- Harmonises with IEC 60155:1993/A1:1995 for glow‑starters used with fluorescent lamps and related discharge lamp applications.
- New informational clause
- Addition of Clause 11 / Annex C: information for luminaire design, including the requirement that the maximum temperature of any part of the starter canister shall not exceed 80 °C.
- Component safety - capacitors
- Capacitors used in starter circuits must be resistant to flame and ignition. The amended test procedure:
- Gradual AC voltage increase until breakdown using a source with about 1 kVA short‑circuit power.
- After breakdown, the capacitor is wrapped with tissue paper per ISO 4046 (Paper - vocabulary) and operated in series with a 40 W inductive ballast at rated voltage for 5 minutes; the capacitor must not ignite the tissue.
- Capacitors used in starter circuits must be resistant to flame and ignition. The amended test procedure:
- Operational performance
- Speed of operation: Test voltage (per IEC 81/901 lamp starting tests) is applied for 25 s; during this period the starter contacts shall open at least seven times (except specified 20 W lamp condition).
- Closed time: During the 25 s test the contacts shall be closed for a minimum total of 10 s.
- Pulse voltage and measurement
- The same test voltage used for speed/starting is applied for 25 s during pulse voltage testing.
- The amendment permits a memory oscilloscope with a specified high‑voltage probe as an alternative to an electrostatic voltmeter (but the electrostatic voltmeter remains the reference in disputes).
- Test circuit details
- Revised Figure 9 defines a high‑voltage test circuit, giving component recommendations (e.g., HV diode types such as BYX90G, HV capacitor values and rated voltages, and electrostatic voltmeter characteristics).
Applications and Users
- Manufacturers of glow‑starters and starter components - to ensure compliance with safety and performance tests.
- Luminaire and lighting designers - to size compartments and verify that starter canister temperatures and mounting meet the 80 °C limit.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies - for performing the specified flame, endurance and pulse‑voltage tests.
- Procurement/specification authors - to reference the standard in product specifications and safety data sheets.
Related Standards
- IEC 60155:1993 (base standard)
- ISO 4046:1978 (referenced for tissue paper used in flame/ignition tests)
- IEC 81 and IEC 901 (lamp starting test voltages referenced)
